Does Anyone Have Info on Morgan Out Island 49

The adventure begins....

I have just acquired a Morgan Out Island 49 hull #491-001
I have been told that only 6 or 7 were ever built. Could this be true?
I have also not been able to find any information on this model.
This one is a ketch, she's big, strong, beautiful, and BIG.
She's had lots of love, but needs much more. Any information would be appreciated.

Thank You, Gord

I have read many of your posts and really appreciate all the info you provide.

I have found that one in the past, however mine is a Ketch not a Sloop
Draft is 6' and not 5'3".

The year is correct, LOA is 49, LWL is 43 Beam is 15, Net Displacement is 43000 lbs. (Dry)

Previous Owner states prior to pealing (to remove blisters and dry the hull) and epoxying the hull below the waterline she weighed in at 47000 lbs (Dry). He also added a bow thruster at that time. (very handy)

'interesting to hear of the Morgan OI 49,- I thought they were all 51's! I'm on one of the very common 41's and we've lived aboard Morgan Out Islands as our only homes since 1973. I'm sure you'll continue to enjoy your fine vessel. Take care and joy, Aythya crew

Hi there Legend.
I live in England, I'm trying to research the Out-island 49, a friend of the family has just acquired one over here, it is a Ketch also.
We are looking at ways to get it CE compliant in the UK so need a load of technical drawings and stabilization data from the original construction.
Don't suppose you have access to anything like that or can put me onto someone that might.
Thanks, happy cruising.

The Out Island series consisted the 28, 30, 33, 36, 41, 49, and 51 models. As far as I know, very few 49s were built. Try calling Morgan Marine (Catalina Yachts) @ 727-544-6681. Ask for Warren Pandy or Toni Carlton. They may have some specific info on the OI49. Good Luck.

Re: Does Anyone Have Info on Morgan Out Island 49

I bought M 49 OI hull number 008, in January 2011. I saw a list that included hull number 010, but did not show 009. A bit odd, but my belief is that 9 were built. Mine is a ketch rig as well. The "original" manual was written for the 51/49. Guess we have the little sisters. She was christened as "Walkabout" but renamed "Southern Cross" somewhere along the way.

Was the first owner Phil Richards or Jack Dunphy? I may know the boat, Phil was a good friend and chartered it in the Caribbean. The original name was "The Last Hurrah". I may be looking for an OI 41 or Irwin next year (retiring !!!)

Because of their age, they are CE exempt. Don't worry about it.

Good news heh?

Re: Does Anyone Have Info on Morgan Out Island 49

It's called the RCD (Recreational Craft Directive)

AFAIK, beyond a certain age, CE is not required.

Re: Does Anyone Have Info on Morgan Out Island 49

Check out RCD on the RYA website. (Royal Yachting Association)

You do not need to comply with RCD if your raggie was built before 16 June 1998.

Spend your money on something worthwhile instead...

That only applies to boats already in the EU at that date.

If you are importing the boat it must be RCD compliant irrespective of age.
