Hurricane Newton Hits Baja California (Cabo San Lucas) Sept 6 2016

Excerpt from Latitude 38 Report:
"Newton, a low-end but nonetheless potentially very destructive Category 1 hurricane, hit southern Baja this morning, and continues to hammer the peninsula, threatening boating interests.

Based on satellite imagery, the eye came very close to, if not right over, Cabo San Lucas. The National Weather Service had one weather station report sustained winds of 67 knots with gusts up to 100 knots. We have not been able to establish phone contact with Marina Cabo San Lucas yet, but have our fingers crossed that the damage was minimal. They’ve been through much stronger storms before.

We also haven’t been able to make contact with anybody in La Paz, although weather reports show winds of 43 knots. Initial reports had the hurricane passing 50 miles to the east, which would be a good thing.

Also threatened are areas such as Puerto Escondido, farther up the eastern shore of Baja, and across the Sea at San Carlos.

Newton is only the seventh hurricane since 1971 to make landfall near Cabo San Lucas. Odile, two years ago, was by far the worst, causing extreme damage that led to mayhem in Cabo, and resulted in three cruisers losing their lives on or near their boats at La Paz."

Steady Hand, the action on this subject is on a thread started a few days back when it was just a TS. The name of the thread is something about "preparing for 50 knots", started by s/v Shameless posting as a name with 3 numbers at the end. It has disappeared from my CP, sorry I can't do better.

There's lots of advice relative to reducing windage, and securing the boat against storm surge, etc.

My boat is on the hard in Guaymas, where Newton is supposed to pass by in a few hours. The northeast quadrant (unfortunately) is sweeping right by. Those in the Guaymas/San Carlos area are looking at sustained 50 knot winds as the forecasts stand right now. It has come down a bit from earlier forecasts, but just a little bit of warm water and he could fire back up.

My fingers are crossed he gets weakened by land and moves on quickly.

Thanks. I was not aware of that thread being about Newton. I did glance at the thread titles in the forum prior to staring this one, but saw nothing or no title mentioning this hurricane by name, so I started this one.

Good luck!
Skookums are strongly built hulls, I recall reading.

Here is the other Newton thread.

How do we prepare our boat for 50 kt winds? - Page 7 - Cruisers & Sailing Forums

I don't mind the multiple threads. Our boat is in San Carlos on stands. Any info might be new and good!

Re: Hurricane Newton Hits Baja California (Cabo San Lucas) Sept 6 2016

Sea Dreaming, the previous owners of my boat live in Guaymas, about 15 minutes from the yard (Marina Guaymas). She just sent me a Facebook video and it's blowing like 20-30 knots right now with rain here and there. Should get more interesting as the night progresses. If I get any info, I'll update my thread and the others as well.

Hopefully nothing more than 50 knots please

ok take a look at nhc at the interactive map. you will see the storm is spozed to make landfall some north of guaymas.
you will all be fine.
san carlos is closer to the storm at landfall., but still outside the cone.

Very stout indeed. 23 tons for a 47 footer. Looking forward to bringing her back north next spring.

Well it's headed right at my boat in Guaymas. I'm watching it closely.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm on the hard there and heading down in 5+ weeks with more gear. I may be leaving sooner.

Yup...We've met. Ted's an old buddy. I wrote an article of him and Chris Catterton sailing a Cheoy Lee 30 through hurricane Iniki.
SV Anna has a hell of a history.

And even better after his fried shrimp, beers, and a shot or two or Don Julio!
