Para-Tech 18' parachute sea anchor

This is a new 18' ParaTech parachute sea anchor in the deployment bag; just as it came from the manufacturer. It has never been used, deployed, of taken out of the bag. No corrosion. Looks as new as the day we bought it.
Asking $500 plus shipping.

No line with it; not at that price.
Since I am sailing the Sea of Cortez and not crossing oceans, I don't think I will ever carry the para-tech sea anchor.

I don't need this and it is "as new"; never been used or taken out of the bag. I would never cross oceans without one.
It's the 18' parachute that creates a slick that takes away the power of even a breaking wave. It will break on either side of the boat but where the slick is will be just a gentle huge wave.

I'll vouch for a parachute anchor - I used the Fiorentino one back in 2000. Sat on that puppy for over 36 hrs waiting for winds to abate down off 50s - at 30 knts double reef, back at the helm...best rest I had once you set it up with chafe gear...

Thankfully I’ve not had to use mine, but my plan is to attach the line to my anchor chain and let out 100’ or so of chain, idea being the chain isn’t going to chafe, and secure the chain just like I do when anchored.

Re: Para-Tech 18' parachute sea anchor

ahh yes I thought about that too - but if I may, 50+kts gusting 60s in big seas, you're boat will still dance quite a bit. It was unnerving at first until I got to a place that I knew I was ok. Yes, I drifted back a little creating a little slick - it's not like heaving to.
The bow was bouncing up and down quite a bit - be careful not to saw the front of your boat off!! Your idea is good - but I would add a an anchor rode hook..that might actually work really well.

Rig a bridle and ride at a bit of an angle to the weather. The parachute creates a "slick" that takes the waves power away. Even breaking waves will break on either side but will not break at the slick, where your boat is behind the 18' parachute.

Shannon 43? Called the "fast passage"?
I really liked that design.

My spouse thought it was too small because she (erroneously) thought family would visit us from time to time. We bought a Kelley-Peterson which is slightly larger and also is an excellent design.

Yes, I am a firm believer in setting up a bridle.
We haven't done any passages per se except for the delivery fro NE to Chesapeake.

The purposes of the bridle are: 1) To keep the boat from being directly head up into the wind so the boat does not back directly down on its rudder. Backing down is very stressful on the rudder. You'll know this is happening when the wheel or tiller begins to violently "snatch" from side to side. You must stop this action before your rudder is severely damaged. If the bridle is properly set up, the rudder will gently snatch to only one side. 2) Since the boat is more stable in pitch than in roll - to the extent that its length is greater than its beam (this may not be so much the case with multi-hulls), by setting the parachute to the side, you can trade off pitching for rolling to minimize and balance the amount of each motion.

Also, when the boat is moving partially athwart instead of only astern, it maximizes the turbulence ("slick") that is generated which causes oncoming wind waves and breaking swells (your greatest enemy) to collapse before they reach the boat (heaving to has the same effect) giving you a much more comfortable ride. The bridle also limits to some extent parametric rolling that develops when your boat resonates with the swell period - by acting as a harmonic dampener.

To visualize the effect of turbulence on collapsing wave action, just look at the smooth water that develops in the wake of a motorboat underway.
