Wow. What do you say about that.

I say ********. The only cyclones in the region this year were TCs Ian and June, neither of which came within 1000NM of him.

Hey scarlet -
You need to cheat and look under the poster's name to see if he listed what kind of boat he/she has.
Don't feel bad though, sometimes I don't get the humor either.

Seriously though I am glad he is ok and was rescued safely.
Oh dear - here we go again, the reason you don't see photos like of monos, is CAUSE THEY SINK. Oh - and it isn't humorous, its isn't a joke. It's dribble, no more no less

Don't 95% of boats never leave a marina with toilet facilities? Ipso facto their heads should be maintenance free !

Thanks for the tip..

I have to admit... it always seems a bit odd to me.. these debates (mono vs multi or which catamaran is better). Its about as ridiculous as arguing over what's better.... a golden retriever, or a pekingese?! I mean, does it really matter what dog (or cat ) you think is better?

Seems that it does to some folks. It's not humour if it is against your choice, but it is if made against the other side.

Ever had a full batten large roach main get hung up so it won't come down? Seen this a few times especially with full batten main. I don't know what happened the jib is blown out too. Try pulling down a full batten main with the wind aft. If he could not turn up into the wind then good luck getting it down.

That's what the sharp knife is for.. cut the halyard.. release the boom.. its feathers and the flapping does the work.
Well it does when I reef beating upwind..
Oh.. and the wind is on his beam..

Sailor Rescued from Condor Trimaran in Texas

Uhh if anything your cutting the leach. Hoping the sail disintegrates. Full batten, down wind loads the track points. If the leach is hung on the mast like really bound it's not the halyard.
I sailed a f27 for years and fing up furling the main compounds all sorts of problems. The main can now come out of track. The halyard is loose so the main fills even more. You can't harden it.
Now if you shredded your jib and can't get the main down you cut the halyard you just added more flopping **** topside. You need to head up. That means tightening the halyard with the best reef point available. Could be a para anchor off the bow to pull it around. Probably don't cut the halyard.
See how the sail is full up on the running backs. The answer is get her pointed up. If not cut the sail.
At the start of the vid it looks down wind and the boat tries to go windward but can't. The leech looks pretty slack so I'm betting the sail is hung. And he can't get any better then broad side which won't ease the load on the full batten load.
Enjoy your thoughts on this as you too have great experience.

SandCrab,

I know you like to keep up on multihull history, so here is a minor correction. The UK publication Observer was the original sponsor, and the original name was the Observer Single-handed Trans Atlantic Race.

I became aware of the race and, as a Hobie Cat sailor, took interest that there was a multihull division. I was pretty impressed in 1980 by American Phil Weld's victory--at age 65-- in Moxie, a Dick Newick designed trimaran, and I followed the race more closely after that.

I believe "The Original" replaced "Observer" in the title sometime in the 1990s as sponsorship changed, but the name had already changed at least once to recognize new sponsorship.

Still, the Condor 40 was a good boat; too bad about this one.

Marshall

Just looked at the OP video again.. in steps.. don't know about the jib being shredded.. maybe a sheet parted or the stopper knot undid.. or he left it slack.. but the sail looks furled 3/4 and flapping as it should if whole.. no separate pennants flailing that I can see..
Your right about the slack leech.. lotsa belly in the sail and the booms centred.. would it be possible its a loose footed sail and its slack on purpose..
Keeps her falling off then running forward to just past beam on before the wind loses drive force and she falls back.. would help balance a damaged ama as has been suggested.. to much bow on would force the damaged ama into the seas and maybe break it off.. hard to tell from the short footage..
What ever.. glad he got off okay

Something to think about. Wonder if anyone else had a hard time getting full batten large roach main down.
