W. PACIFIC & ASIA/ E.CHART USERS REVIEW

We discussed starting Consumer Report Threads for each CHARTING REGION to advise buyers on which ELECTRONIC Charts to buy for their cruising grounds.

To start a new one for your Region just begin with your general area and same TITLE Format, so it is easy to find and update as new upgrades come out.

This should help those who do not have the option to compare actual Chart details before buying.

In my case, I am installing a New Furuno MFD and need to decide on Chart Program to cover from Micronesia to Burma, with Philippines, Indonesia, PNG, Thailand and Malaysia in between.

If answers could follow this guideline, it would become an efficient review for each Region:

FOR W. PACIFIC & ASIA: WHICH CHART DATA OFFERS:
  1. BEST HARBOR AND ANCHORAGE DETAIL
  2. BEST ACCURACY
  3. OTHER FEATURES
  4. ANY COMMENTS/COMPARISONS of systems you have looked at
  5. ECS PROGRAM: you use or recommend and with what CHARTs by product name covering what Region and Title for
.C-MAP, NAVIONICS...etc

Fair Winds!

Re: W. PACIFIC & ASIA/ E.CHART USERS REVIEW

The Navnet3D systems use Maxsea charts. These are sourced as either Jepperson CMAP or Navionics. We have used the CMAP version throughout N. Am (E and W coast), Bahamas, Carib, Mexico and the S. Pacific and found them excellent. (Not to be confused with the bootleg CMAP charts that typically used on OpenCPN).

Thanks Paul....
Were you ever able to compare with Navioncs?

CMAP vs Navioncs detail coverage discussion in the Caribbean, has CMAP seeming to be liked better..... by those who have compared both.

That is exactly what I am trying to find out for this Region from Members who cruise this region and can compare with realty.

Re: W. PACIFIC & ASIA/ E.CHART USERS REVIEW

The only place I've seen hard differences was in the Bahamas where Navioincs was much poorer. That was a few years ago and may have been remedied by now

So for W Pacific and S.E. Asia, can anyone compare detail coverage of CMap vs Navioncs?

Re: W. PACIFIC & ASIA/ E.CHART USERS REVIEW

Over the last week I sailed around the north and south coasts of mainland PNG. I was using both Navionics (on a smartphone and tablet) and CMAP on a Furuno plotter. I found the Navionics to be more detailed. Both proved very accurate in all the tight locations were I could compare plotter location to actual features.

(I also found the Navionics Android display to be easier to read in detail than the Furuno)
