Have you ever sailed on a Hunter Vision with a big utility pole mast?

What do you think of this rig? Do you wonder why the big utility pole mast didn't catch on? Maybe they use all those for wind generator farms now?

Any failures to report? Considering all the stainless for rigging is now coming from China, maybe a good thing.

Do Hunter owners not know how to use google?

I didn't know the name of the Hunter, so I googled "Unstayed hunter" and found the vision.

I didn't know if there had been any rig failures, so I googled "Hunter vision 32 rig failure" and got this link

Considering they are no longer making them, and nobody else has emulated them, it was a failure.

Well, it's kind of ugly.....but hey, at least Hunter gave it their best. Again, any reports of failure on this design? If I could get rid of standing rigging (without losing my mast), I'd be a happy man.

If you'd read further you'd know that Isomat made the mast for the Vision Series. They didn't make traffic signal poles. I learned this information by Googling Isomat.

I don't think the last thread with over 9000 views should have been closed, I always thought forums liked popular threads.

Your link to the dismasted 32 is still there. Googled that, too. Seems dismasting on the Vision is pretty rare. And it's not the only boat with a shroudless spar. Both Freedom and Nonesuch have enjoyed great success with that design.

I would have to think weight is the issue, no matter who builds the boat an unstayed mast has to be heavier and I would think going to exotic composites would be required to get the weight back down

I used to sail a Freedom 25 in the UK on lake Coniston in the 80s. I think it was built in the Isle of Man under contract. Incredible to walk around with no rigging.

The rig has it's advantages and disadvantages.
Advantage = easy to sail
Disadvantages = doesn't sail very well. large diameter mast (creates more turbulence and drag), higher center of gravity makes it more tender, mast is expensive and hard to find, fractional rig. It's also an eyesore.

Some friends had a hunter vision. Yes it's tender, but hardly an eyesore. They said it was a bit of a handful to sail on the SF bay. Though I expect they may not have been too experienced. They did mention that the effort on the rudder was excessive. It did have a nice cockpit layout and the insides were huge compared to my little boat.
