Yanmar YP10 Box Gearchange Problem

The problem is with a Yanmar YP10 gearbox, attached to a 3QM30(H) engine.

The gearbox goes straight from forward into reverse, without a neutral point.

"Is this something I can fix myself, or do I need to go to a mechanic? I have checked the cable and this does not seem to be the problem."

The yacht in question is at Vuda Point Marina in Fiji and that may be relevant to available engineering services !!

Has anyone any idea what may be causing this to happen?
