Upstream and Downstream - Sailing the Nile River, Egypt

I wonder if someone has any experience of sailing your own boat on river of the Nile? We are in our early stages of planning a cruise in the east Mediterranean Sea, joining the Eastern Mediterranean Yachting Rally (EMYR). We are playing with the ideas of going up river of the Nile after the end of EMYR. Will this be a realistic idea?

We took a Nile cruise a couple years ago from Aswan to Luxor.
The temples and scenery were very cool.
But the merchants and beggars DO NOT LEAVE YOU ALONE... DO NOT LEAVE YOU ALONE... DO NOT LEAVE YOU ALONE... DO NOT LEAVE YOU ALONE... DO NOT LEAVE YOU ALONE...

From Luxor I tried to get a boat to take me up (down river) to Cairo, but was told by several sources that it was not allowed for tourists because of Bandits.
Seemed far fetched at the time, but the reality for me was no one would take us.

Just a note it was my third visit to Egypt and each time, no matter where I was, the Merchants and beggars DO NOT LEAVE YOU ALONE... DO NOT LEAVE YOU ALONE... DO NOT LEAVE YOU ALONE... DO NOT LEAVE YOU ALONE... DO NOT LEAVE YOU ALONE...
