Cost for bottom paint

I just got a quote for bottom paint on my 40' catamaran the prices are completely unreasonable.
The cost go like this
Haul out and block
also first coat 1890.00
second and 3rd coat 890.00
clean sail drives and paint 600.00
If any sanding 25 per ft or 65per hour
This is in Fort Myers
I am amazed at these prices any one know a boat yard that is more reasonable.

Those prices don't sound too unreasonable for a 40-foot anything.

Have to agree that it doesn't sound unreasonable expense's for 44 LOA mono
haul out $600
Lay days @ $100 (5 days) $500
Pressure wash $175
Labor for sanding $600
Material for sanding $75
Screen set up $125
Paint $1400 vivid white
Material (brushes tape ect) $100
Total $3575

I did the painting myself so save the $85 and hour labor on it. What paint are you using and why is haul out, blocking and first coat of paint in one amount. I would ask for and Itemized break down of charges.
I did other jobs while hauled so can't really say the haul out cost goes directly to bottom paint.

Sounds ridiculous to me. Haul and paint one coat with no sanding at $1890?
Haul and block = .5 -.75 hour (it's a cat, no real blocking)
pressure wash= .5 hour
tape and paint hulls = maybe 3 hours max.

As reference. Haul out and block, pressure wash and four months storage costs me about $1100 in Southern Maryland for a 28 footer. 4 footer would be close to $2000 I think.

Good bottom paint is $260/gallon and takes me a couple of hours for 2 coats. Figure 6 or 7 hours for yours. 2 coats last me two full seasons. Tape and rollers add maybe $30.

I'm guessing roughly 2 to 3 gallons for a 44 footer for two coats.

What is stopping you from getting quotes from other boatyards or independent painters?

We paid less than $1,000 to haul and block, raise the waterline 1" with Interlux 2000, sand bottom and one coat of paint (didn't include paint) on our 38'x20' cat in NC. Monthly dry storage was $175.00 per month.
Only places I can think that can haul you in the Ft Myers area would be
Diversified or Gulf Ways in Ft Myers Beach,
Owl Creek in Alva or
Belle Hatchee in LeBelle.

Now you understand why so many boaters are DIY. And this is just paint...wait till you have an engine problem...thats when you REALLY see unreasonable prices. Did you think everyone on here likes doing boat work "as a hobby"?

Have you priced out bottom paint? Around here the little can is about $100. I needed 2 for my 35 foot mono...spread thin.

Please remember, most of the world view people who own or live on "yachts" as the ultra wealthy. We are easy prey for overpricing. Visit any marine store and price out some SS hardware...then visit Home Hardware and price out the same thing....WOW. Heaven forbid you ever need a special part (engine, deck, rigging)...open your wallet wide and say goodbye to your dollars.

In fact, we probably are the wealthiest people on earth. Many of us live on our boats, no 9-5 work grind, no debts pulling us down. The guy who sands your 40 foot hull might have a wife and kids to feed, debts to pay. His life probably sucks compared to yours. But he's busting his butt in a boatyard with a power sander and a face full of toxic dust. I've done this. Its sucks. Maybe we ARE the luckiest people on earth. There is so much famine, war, and pain in the world, and here we are playing with boats. Yes, we are the lucky ones.

thats why boating is so expensive,because of people like you with loads of cash.As previously said 90%of boat owners own and live on there boats because of fiancial constraints and are diy'ers through cost not hobbie.

A couple of months ago I had my Beneteau 44 bottom done in the UK...Ouch...
It cost GBP2585 (about USD3700). Things are not cheep in the UK. Would have done it myself except I'm in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria










2 x hoist
1 x pressure wash
Old copper coat removed
1 x primer
2 x final coats

When I called Diversified they would not even give me an estimate without me giving them my credit card number first.

agree with getting prices from other yards also check what kind of job they do. if you ever done a bottom job yourself you know why it costs so much

If the bottom isn't in bad shape it really isn't that much work. With ablative paint we do a really good job of pressure washing. After that a light sanding then apply paint. For the sanding on a 38' cat maybe 2-3 hours, for painting maybe 1 hour for 2 people.
