Cruising? Racing? How many people? Load required? Budget? There is a huge envelope here from room to zoom all of which can be great bluewater boats for different purposes, multiple purpose etc....

Re: Perfect Bluewater Trimaran

Very practical use of a thread Stephen!

Mine will be the one I have and my fantasy boat will be based on a Newick around 45- 50 feet because it needs to be that long to hoof what the Nicol can carry. It's main reason for existence will be the good looks because layout wise it isn't as utilitarian.

Practical is a word that should be used in the mission objective. While the Vagabond is an antiquated duck it really works and flies well for what I do. Price wise modern boats start costing into 5 figures per knot more for extra speed and will have to be longer for the same room.

Re: Perfect Bluewater Trimaran

If all you're specifying is bluewater capable, then size has almost nothing to do with it. All of the (Jim Brown designed) Searunners from 31' and larger have made numerous circumnavigations.
The (John Marples designed) Constant Camber series based on the Searunners are just as seaworthy.

Plenty of others have gotten the job done with different compromises of speed, safety, comfort, and cost.

For a cruising couple, my ideal boat is a 40' proa. For my budget, I am more likely to end up with a Searunner or Constant Camber of 35' or less.

31ft works but small, 35 is perfect.
can't give my 35 Marples away, maybe the beds are too large?

Nah. Yours is the only swing-wing M35 because nobody wants a swing-wing cruising trimaran.

Plus, it's in New Mexico.
Also, an unfinished project.

Three strikes that leave people looking for a finished boat already in or near the water.

If you finished it, it would sell to someone willing to haul it.
If you hauled it to California, it would sell to someone willing to finish it.
You don't want to do either, yet expect someone else to.
You've limited yourself to finding someone who wants to finish building a boat in the desert, and then hauling it to the coast- a very tough market because it doesn't exist.

It's a damned shame, because that could be a lovely boat if finished off with some fixed beams.

Re: Perfect Bluewater Trimaran

it is 3 1/2 hours east of San Francisco, the interior is built except the galley, Marples agreed the stock beams would easily sister into what was already built. I threw in a $3000 tandem trailer and a 6 cylinder tows her at 60mph. I paid over $2,500 to finish the deck, cockpit and prep one of the amas for the akas. Her 5 sails are gorgeous and brand new, the also new mast is 42' with an incredable boom, her daggerboard and rudder are pieces of art

At $18,500 or $16,000 without the trailer and spinnaker she still is one of the greatest designs ever.
yes, people don't want to work but having a boat with all new gear when completed is worth something

Re: Perfect Bluewater Trimaran

Yep, an unfinished boat is the hardest sell. You could get a completed boat in the water for that money, start sailing and upgrade the things that need it as they need it. Yes it would be an older tri but then many weren't used hard so sails could still be fine. It is a shame about the Marples. If you start collecting offers my guess is they will be less than half what you are asking. To get what you feel is fair value is the old needle in the haystack proposition. The needle is there somewhere but you have to go through a heck of a haystack to find it. If it is there. I saw a Marples 35 aft cockpit in good shape completed go for less than $25,000.

Re: Perfect Bluewater Trimaran

it was in Quebec City and the hulls were nice but the interior was horrible, drove up to see it, as well as the one in Oregon and the one in Seattle. This M35 could also be the lightest ever built.

There was a very nice looking Newick for sale in N Carolina a while back, glass. I confess to lusting a bit. I'll see if I can find it again.

Re: Perfect Bluewater Trimaran

Oh no )

Let's keep it simple.

Boat up to 40' is much cheaper then above 50'.
Similar to the inside volume.

Newick or Lerouge is rather sporty car once Patterson is more comfortable.

No, it doesn't. There are dozens of tri designs that would be "blue water" capable. Without more specific requirements, no single boat stands out.

Cheers,

Re: Perfect Bluewater Trimaran

I know of a Seawings 36, designed by Skip Johnson and built/owned by a talented machinist. Foam core construction and quality throughout. It performs very well and has spacious accommodation. And, as it so happens, this rare bird is quietly for sale in Maryland.
