catalina 27 - $6k!

Hi everyone --

I am listing the 1982 catalina 27 for sale -- this is a wonderful little cruiser that we have taken great care of over the past few years, and I would like it to go to a nice cruising person. It is a perfect starting out boat that is worth much more -- We bought her for $10000 and put at least 5k into it -- new sails, autopilot, boom kicker etc.
Diesel Beta with low hours (around 200) works amazingly and is dependable -- has been kept up and professionally installed, and we are sad to leave the boat, but we already purchased a larger boat for the growing family. Price is very low, and it reflects the fact that we would like to see her sold by April when the current marina storage lapses. It's in NJ in Seabright, currently on land, so everything can be inspected etc.

Many thanks.
Eugene

Catalina 27 - $6k

Hi everyone -- I tried to post this but I had a bad link in the message so I am trying again -- The Catalina 27 would make a great starting boat for any beginning cruiser, and we would like to see it go to someone that is interested in the cruising lifestyle. This boat is in great shape -- We bought it for $10,000 3 yrs ago and put a lot of work in to her and at least $4000 worth of new stuff -- adding an autopilot, new sails, boom kicker, a new head etc. The Beta motor has low hours (200), runs great, and has been serviced regularly. No blisters -- boat has been barrier coated, and then bottom painted every year.

Boat is now for sale as we bought a larger boat for our growing family, and I am sad to see it go. The low price reflects the fact that we need it out of the marina by April -- which is when the winter storage lapses. We would like to avoid being in a position to pay double for having two boats in the marina.

Too bad it's in NJ. It'd be gone in a heart beat in So. Cal.

Re: Catalina 27 - $6k

Do you still have the Catalina ?
How are the aluminium window frames,,leaking ?
What about the toe rail,,is that leaking ?How are the keel bolts,,any sign
of rust coming from the keel to hull join on the outside,,,any rust stains
around the bolts in the bilge ?
Soft spots in the deck,,?
While realizing this is an older yacht,,i Don't want to travel up to N.J. this
time of the year to look at a boat that is in the same condition as many
in Florida.
Look forward to your reply;;;

Re: Catalina 27 - $6k

Hi Mindsofman:
To answer your questions...
Aluminum frames just above the sleeping settee on the starboard side were leaking. We had the yard fix that at $300... yakes... Then the port started leaking - same window. We didn't fix that yet as it happened late this summer, but other than the non dripless gland, that's the only water coming in the boat. Apparently the fix can be done by ourselves but it's tedious as you have to scrape every last bit of silicone someone ever put on that port and then bed them with polysulfide....

Toe rail is not leaking or at least wasn't last fall...

No rust on the outside - no leaks of keel, no Catalina smile. The previous owner dropped the keel and replaced the bolts with stainless and rebelled the joint. They also barrier coated the boat. No soft spots on deck.

The thing that sold us on this boat was the motor was superbly replaced - the boat was owned by a diesel mechanic who used this boat as a show for his beta drop-in replacements of the Atomic 4. Everything else we was sails and handling, and we knew that part and what we wanted. It's not perfect, and I still have unfinished projects, but we have to see it go now. I have a video of my wife sailing it, but the *&^%*& rules of this increasingly draconian forum does not let me attach a link, or even my email. If you pm me I can try to split a url and see whether that works.

It sails really well and very well balanced - the new 130% genoa is a far better sail than the 150 the boat came with, as it's a triradial.

I am not sure it's worth coming from Florida as you might still be disappointed... and you would have to move it swiftly if you bought it, or make your own deal with the boatyard. I am showing it to a couple of people that are local. Basically the first $6k takes it, but the boat is currently buried in over a foot of snow, and we're about to get 6 more inches tomorrow and over the weekend. It's a winter wonderland, and it's surely driving all boat people nuts.... I wish I was in Florida...

Cheers.

Re: Catalina 27 - $6k

HI. Yes, it's still available. I showed it to couple of people last weekend. It is not easy showing with all the snow and I would like to wait for the thaw before going back there (I'm at 2 hrs drive as well). Right now I have plans to show it to 4 people on March 14-15-16. Preferably March 16 afternoon. If that works let me know.

That boat is really nice! Wish I was up your way. Sorry the winter weather is not cooperating with you on the sale.

Good luck in March!

Re: Catalina 27 - $6k

Hi everyone -- Well... a couple of people saw the boat - no offers yet - I am needing to get this thing off the yard by the end of the month - If anyone is looking for a good boat, -- the marina owner says it would be a pity for this one to go to boat angel - It would be a good tax write-off, but then again - if someone is looking for a good clean boat that is a great starter with a great engine, new sails etc. -- Let me know.. I am showing it next weekend - over Easter.
