Re: Mantus Anchors
Greg,
I would like to see a "time plot" of the pull force and pulling speed in your tests.
In fact, the tests you did were "dragging tests", not "holding tests", since you imposed a movement to the anchors. It is well known that the force exerted by the bottom on an anchor depends on its motion (see for example Dr Knox's articles in PBO). The force is significantly less when the anchor is stationary (not dragging).
As Jimbo highlighted, these "infinite scope" tests probably show the "ultimate holding capability" of an anchor. Nothing proves that the ratio between this value and the practical holding strength with a given scope is the same for all anchors. To put it another way, we are waiting for more tests, with more published measurements, in more realistic setups.
There have been some heated anchor threads on this forum in the past. Some members denied any practical value to such tests. You are in a position to try and prove otherwise.

Alain, we will do our best! The main point of these tests was to visually convey the difference in the setting abilities between the Mantus and the rest. As you can imagine everyone has their idea of a perfect test design. Now I realize we have an uphill battle to establish ourselves in the industry and we will continue to test and publish our results.

I just love tests that are not consistent like no chain on one, then chain on another. And how do you know how much pull w/o a crane scale?
You are going to get the once over here on CF.
I've never once used a cable on my Bruce or Delta. 10:1 scope is squat w/o chain. Details, details! They will be looked at under a microscope with all these eyes. And what about retrieval?

To the first part of the question, yes the anchor is bolted so it can break down for easy storage.
I am not sure which video you watched, it can get confusing. There were 3 distinct videos posted. I think you are referring to the first Video on the beach. If so, it served only to demonstrate that the anchor is able to penetrate hard bottom, where others can't.
Here are the three different videos:
In the last video of the group, chain and cable are use ever time and a dyno-mometer is being used to get measurements. I hope that helps.

Greg,
That's funny you weren't aware that some CF members are very demanding when it comes to anchor testing . You could have read some of the anchor threads .
FYI, my job is sea trials for a shipbuilding company. Then, I have a clear opinion of what a real performance test should be: in addition to pictures, I want measurements and consistency in operating procedure. IMO, your videos are interesting but don't prove much about the performance of the Mantus anchor. Keep going and posting .

Re: Mantus Anchors
I know these anchor threads can be a bit contentious. I just want to relate my real life experience with this anchor. I have watched Greg develop this anchor and have been present at some of the tests and this anchor out performs all the other anchors by far. I am not an engineer, just a guy with many years sailing experience. I have no financial interest in this anchor. I know the technical types want to see hard data and I believe Greg is compiling that but for what it's worth, in my opinion, this anchor is pretty incredible. I sure wouldn't hesitate to put one on my bow and be able to sleep at night.

Re: Mantus Anchors
Galveston bay has some lousy, and I mean lousy, holding ground. Will be very interested in how it handles the mud and oyster bed floor.
In my single handing days I used danforth, but then alway drug a little. I would anchor on the south side so I had plenty of sea room :-).
We now have the Manson and it digs in immediately and stays put. Will be interested in how your new designed anchor breaks down, or did I misunderstand?
Thanks for the info, we LOVE anchor talk around here

The anchor does break down into three parts and stows easily, there is a video of this on the website. Check out the WHY MANTUS tab, and watch the demo.
We are doing an in the boat test in Galveston Bay in the coming days so stay tunned.....
