Cellular reception on Baja Bash

Will I be able to access Sailing Weather - Marine Weather Forecasts for Sailors and Adventurers - PassageWeather on my AT&T cellphone with a Mexican data plan when bashing to San Diego from Cabo? That is, how likely is it that I will get cellular reception at various hide out anchorages up the coast en-route?

To date I have not bothered with a data plan (voice and text only) since cellular reception in Mexican coastal anchorages in the Sea of Cortez has been non-existent where most needed. For example, anchorages on Isla Caletida Partida, the stretch between La Paz and Loreto, etc.

Thanks in advance, J

Re: Cellular reception on Baja Bash

We got reception off Cabo, Bahia Santa Maria, San Juanico (voice only), Turtle Bay, and near Ensenada. Do you have SSB or. Ham radio? You can supplement with weather from the Sonrisanet net.

Re: Cellular reception on Baja Bash

Geary, the weather guru in Bahia Concepcion inside the Sea of Cortez, broadcasts his forecast daily on HAM frequency, 3.968 LSB, at 1345Z. If you are not a HAM, of course you can listen, but not participate. If you are a HAM, and can't copy Geary well, other cruisers will provide a relay for you. Usually the propagation is such that boats going up the outside can pick up his forecasts. You could always contact another boat on VHF and get Geary's forecast from them. He is very aware of the need of weather updates for northbound boats, and will do all he can for you.

zzmeyer, thanks.

bajatrawler, I read the sonrisa.net posts from Geary on the net, but don't see any pacific side forecasts for coastal boats. does he do a different one on the ssb? is he live taking questions then?

Available forecasts are described here:

http://sonrisanet.org/Saildoc_info.html

You want:

http://sonrisanet.org/Saildocs/Outside.html

Geary does take weather questions at the end of his broadcast.
