Mexico - La Paz ocean temperature

I'm thinking of taking the kids on their first cruise in La Paz in February.

I checked seatemperature.org and watertemperature.org. One says the water temperature is 63 degrees in February. The other says 83. Big difference.

A little help, please. 63 or 83?

Thanks!

I was there in May (many years ago) and the water was closer to 63 than 83.

Yeah, it's still winter in Feb. But if you look at the temps for Scammon Lagoon, that might give you a sense of what's happening outside, then. There's lots of whale watching traffic, and one of them might actually post numbers for you.

There can be that big of a temperature swing between summer and winter.
The water in La Paz and the sorrrunding Islands is too cold for us to swim in the winter, so we would head to the Mexican Mainland for water waters!

63 water temp in a lot of Baja that time of year and thru April maybe. May would be perfect although hot outside by end of May. Also, the Northers get going early in the year and not something you want to contend with in an unfamiliar boat and territory.

For current sea temperatures in the La Paz area, along with a range of averages, you might be interested in using the following link:La Paz Sea Temperature | Mexico Water Temperatures
For other useful information about La Paz, I'd recommend: Club Cruceros
Enjoy your cruise.

Re: Mexico - La Paz ocean temperature

neophyte-- in your 7 years of cruising mexico did you ever notice geary, the owner of http://eebmike.com/ has his weather station in el burro cove in conception bay?? he is the weather guru in mexican cruising.
i am surprised you had not found him. he is the premier weather site for mexican cruisers. everyone else has found him--many even know him personally.
i havent yet met him as i donot sail soc, but stay in mainland tropical mexico. he has good info for us also-san felipe to zihuatenejo.
i have been planning to visit him once my repairs are finished.

Yes, Zeehag, I am familiar with EEMike but noted you had already cited that resource. I thought I'd just add another link that might also be useful. I'm sure, just as you do, we tend to use multiple sources for weather and information when sailing in Mexico. Thanks for the shout out. Hope you're still having a great time...good reading your comments and seeing you're alive and well, good lady!

the more sites for weather the better-- is always good to have more rather than less info!
i had difficulty finding a prediction for water temps-- as a la nina year, it may be a little difficult to accurately predict the temp. that la nina current looks stronger than normal and is definitely wider.

Re: Mexico - La Paz ocean temperature

Hi dwmCA,

I'm on the Ham & SSB daily from November until May as I work my way down the coast from Mazatlan to Zihuatanejo on my sailboat. I continually hear how cold it is up in the Sea of Cortez when I am swimming down in places like Tenecatita..... Of course 61 degree water temperatures might sound warm if you are coming in from Minnesota or Toronto! The average sea temperature in Febuary in Zihuatanejo is 81 degrees.

I thought this would be a good time to put a plug in for the Zihuatanejo Sailfest that is held the first week of Febuary and benefits the children of Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo. The Sailfest will be held this year from Feb 6-12 with a fun boat rally, boat parade, parties, concerts, dances, chili cook-off, street fairs, school tours, and much more. You can read more about the festival at Zihua SailFest

Zihuatanejo is a great traditional Mexican fishing village with a wonderful produce and meat market. Your kids will love the beaches and the swimming on La Ropa or Las Gatas beaches. The cruisers (including myself) will be available to take your family out sailing with possibly a day trip to Isla Grande during Sailfest. Come on down and meet the "Cruisers"! I'm sure your family will have a great time.
