Buying boat, storing and using in Canada

Input concerning the purchase, use and winter stowage of a boat in Canada year round, by a US citizen, is appreciated.

Winter stowage depends on where and size of boat. I don't believe being an American really matters on Stowage as long as you pay the fees. As for buying others may chime in that are more familiar with the purchasing details.

What kind and size of boat are you and where do you plan on storing it...i.e. - Ontario, BC ??

Re: Buying boat, storing and using in Canada

Thanks for your input.
My concern deals not with the relative cost vs. type of boat and size, but as to the legality of a US citizen keeping a boat in Canada for extended time (several years). The ideal scenario would be buying in Canada and using and storing in Canada. As to tourist and visa type of papers that would be a separate but linked requisite as well.
Tnx Richard
PS
As to Canadian location that has not been determined.
Wanted to get general overall information.
If my plan is not doable then location is moot.

Here is what I believe are the rules. If you buy a boat in Canada and it is registered in Canada you can keep it here no matter what your citizenship is. However if the boat is registered in the US you have to take it with you when you leave.

Here is a link and phone number that might help.

A telephone number for information is 1-800-267-6687.

Ahoy Mottseng,
Your information sounds logical and I will pursue the quest on that premiss.
My next R&D will be to find the most productive water area to sail in Canada.
That may be limited to the desirability of the boat choice, but should be able to be
lived with.
Thank you again for your reply.
Have a good and safe day and sail.
Richard

Re: Buying boat, storing and using in Canada

If my memory serves right, Canada Border Services Agency rules changed about a year or so ago and that now you would have to pay import duties if you keep your boat in Canada more than I think, 6 months. It has lead to a number of boatyards in Nova Scotia losing US customers as a result. There was some political lobbying to relax the rules, but I don't know how far that got.

Good luck.
