Liveaboard with 7'0" headroom minimum? what are my options?

My wife and I are entertaining the idea of living aboard a powerboat in the Pacific Northwest. We already spend big parts of the summer out on the water, and really enjoy it.

There are two problems however.

1. Our Ranger Tugs 31 is too small to live on.

2. I am 6'9" tall, and and have little patience for ducking every moment of every day. I am also not skinny at 310 pounds.

Our Ranger is the best option we could find in it's class, as I can stand up with lots of room at the helm (7'2") and half the living area, and not suffer too much in the rest of the main living space(6'8" +/-) the rear cockpit is 6'11", so life is pretty good out on the boat.

We are looking for a boat/yacht under 55' (preferably well under 50') to live on, and wondering if any of you have any great ideas. Websites of manufacturers are horrible at providing this information, and if they do they are bragging about the generous 6'6" headheight.

So far I've found

Mckinna 48 or 57

Krogan express 52 or 49

But that's about it.

No interest in a sailboat. Being 6'9" has dampened my enthusiasm for booms swinging about.

Are you looking for power or sail?

He is looking for power, referencing the choices he has listed. I'm sure you've checked out Nordhaven and Fleming.

Re: Liveaboard with 7'0" headroom minimum? what are my options?

just to educate the pygmies out there ......
tall is much more than just headroom.
splay of stance, height of benches and seats, length of bunks
showers that do more than wet the nipples
toilets that allow movement without knees behind ears
eye levels, hand levels for holds and grips, winch and rope placement, general operating ergonomics. reach spheres etc etc

we only actually want what you short people with undernourished parents already have on a boat

if I hear one more boat salesman (inevitably short barrel shaped low centre of gravity types) say 6'3" is cathedral headroom I'll hit em.

Re: Liveaboard with 7'0" headroom minimum? what are my options?

I sense 2020 and I have led parallel lives.

One sometimes just gets damned sick of nothing ever fitting.

For you 5'9'ers out there I'm asking for the equivalent of a 5'11" ceiling for you. Nothing overly luxurious. Just 3" over my head and a few less dangerous bulkheads.

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

A Westerly 43 sailing yacht has excellent headroom throughout.

Hatteras 70 only has 6'7" max in most spaces. Smaller boats max out at 6'6".

Re: Liveaboard with 7'0" headroom minimum? what are my options?

we've given up and are building
as said
headroom alone is not just the point....
the rest of the fit out always still needed reconfiguring.
and most "big" boats tended towards either luxury that we can't afford or as one builder said "just whack the freeboard up a bit" (yes really).
when you're tall and looking for a liveaboard, without the goldplated extras, the choices are not really to be found. well meaning short peoples' recommendations aside

Never having faced the problem I don't know but suspect what 2020 says is right. You'll be better off to build your own.

I would add the Grand Banks 49 to the list. It has much more head room than the 42 or 46.

The Nordhaven's have 6'6" throughout. Beautiful boats though.

Re: Liveaboard with 7'0" headroom minimum? what are my options?

Thanks Wayne,

I did a search, and I found some posted data on the Grand Banks 49.

Headroom 6'7" in salon and 6'4" lower cabins V-Berth length 7' Guest cabin berth length 6'4" Master stateroom berth length 6'8".

Unfortunately, still ducking my head everywhere.
