Big, Fast, And Available Trimaran?

Hi,

Looking around at Tri's. However, I am surprised at how few seem to be out there for purchase once you are getting around the 40'+ range. Why is this?

The Chris White Hammerhead 54 or the Explorer 44 seems to be what I would be looking for, but from reading another thread, hardly any were built?

If you know of any tri models that are around 40-60', fast yet for blue water cruising, and, would be available (new or used) after a handful of months / year of looking, please share! (Also, there is a big although limited budget here, so please no 7 figure custom boats that take years to build, thanks

The only option I see at the moment might be the Dragonfly 1200, although that is smaller than I'd like. Also Does anyone know anything about the availability of those chris white models?

The main reason your not finding anything is in that size range catamarans give far more for the buck.
I love trimarans, but the reality is they are expensive to build and are usually homebuilt by "enthusiasts"
There are a few orma 60's on the market if that floats your boat but not cruisers like the White boats.

In the Fla. Keys. A 55' Dick Newick design and he never drew a slow boat.
Catamarans for Sale: Basic Preview of Catamarans

There are a couple of homebuilt White Hammerhead hulls on the Vancouver Craigslist. Needs lots of work to finish.

Not as fast but interesting:
A Horstman 55 in halfmoon Bay.

And a 50 Horstman in SF on CL.
I think both of these have boards so the pointability should be better than average.

Re: Big, Fast, And Available Trimaran?

There is the Neel 45 and 50. At first it looked too much like a spaceship to me, but once you get over the shock of the design, it's actually very clever. What is your price range? Since the boat relatively new, there aren't many on the used market yet. They just introduced a 60 foot version now too:
NEEL trimarans

I love the Dragonfly 1200 - it's not really too small, but certain parts are, like the head and the refrigerator are ridiculously tiny. And the prices people ask for used ones are insane, particularly when they simply don't sell. Have seen all the same ones on the market for almost a year.

There are also a couple of Contour 50's on the market as well.

Inexpensive, fast.

Re: Big, Fast, And Available Trimaran?

There are two ocean going well maintained trimarans, and a 42' Newick catamaran for sail and on the hard at Greene Marine in Yarmouth, Maine.

There's a bit of information about "Scout", 39' fast cruising tri in the New England Multihull Association Newsletter (I don't think the price is correct as the owner had a lot of work done on it last year): NEMA Members Classified.

"Friends" is a 35' ocean going racer/cruiser and also in the yard. Walter Greene designed and built them both: 207 846-3184.

Peter Maclean had a 42'Newick Creative tri for sale (sistership to my own) last year, located on the Great Lakes; I don't know if he sold it yet. Peter MacLean [macleanp@northern.on.ca]. photo at Dick Newick - Aeroyacht

You might also contact Gregor Tarjan at Aeroyacht Sailing Catamarans | Fountaine Pajot Catamarans | Power Catamarans | Multihull Dealer Brokerage. who has listings on many multihulls around the world and specializes in Blue Water Cruisers.

Re: Big, Fast, And Available Trimaran?

Thanks for all the ideas!

One that kind of jumped out at me (besides the NEEL, whoa!) is the 55' Dick Newick Tri that Sand Crab mentioned.

Can anyone elaborate on this design?

Link

Two masts! Never been presented with that. Faster? Tedious? How would this design compare to i.e. 40' condor or 50' contour? Any thoughts? (Mostly for my edification here)

Re: Big, Fast, And Available Trimaran?

This one is called a ketch because the bigger mast is in the front. If it was reversed then it would be a schooner. Back about 20+ years lots of boats were ketchs now most are just sloops with the one mast which I suspect is due to cost. Ketches do have quite a few options in sail trimming and it means 2 shorter masts rather than one big one which means bridge clearance issues.. Others like the one single mast for the simplicity because it has almost half as many lines. There is no right or wrong here. I'd say that Newick is smokin' fast but the Condor may be even faster. The Contours are usually optioned up so they are heavier but more civilized. The Contours will still beat most cats or any other boat.
The Newick doesn't have a bimini so it's a no go for me. It is so cool, though.

Re: Big, Fast, And Available Trimaran?

I tried to edit my last post but was too late. I am not sure what the configuration of the Newick is. I reviewed the listing and the pics and can't tell if it's a ketch or schooner. The listing doesn't say and there are no good pics of the entire masts. Sorry.

You should buy it and tell us all about it.

That remembers me I had last week a video conference with the designer of a 40 Footer which is for sales and I am interested it.

At the end of the talk he asked for the prize the owner demands... naming it he answered: "With a 50 footer (or ORMA) I'd get much bigger hulls for the same prize."

But I have my doubts... as I know some ORMA hulls (refitted) are available for round 150-160 Thousand upwards. The Ex-Groupama of Frank Cammas (an ORMA 60 built in 1998) actually is in the market for 400,000 Thousand Euros.

BarnaKiel, do you have some links ??? Where to get an Open 50 ? :-) Tks in advance.

Happy Friday !

Hi Skip

Philippe at the above website has an excellent selection of trimarans for sale including a Dragonfly 1200 at a very good price. I would speak to him about your specific requirements.
