Passage from Virgin Islands to Florida

I am wondering about the passage from Virgin Islands to Florida via Puerto Rico, DR, Turks & Caicos, Bahamas in the month of May. What can I expect for this passage? It seems like it would be a nice downwind sail most of the way??

Re: Passage from Virgin Islands to Florida

I was just reading an article by John Kretschmer in the March edition of Sailing, where he describes common trade-wind routes. Check it out, as there's some good info, but not specifically to your question.

Thanks, I will check it out. I met John many years ago when he was a Yacht Broker in Fort Lauderdale. Great guy!

Re: Passage from Virgin Islands to Florida

Your post is pretty vague as to what you are looking for, for an equally vague answer...prevailing SE winds at 15kt throughout that course in May, so yes, generally downwind and fast all the way. There are lots of posts on this particular passage (including several from me), not sure whether you tried a search or not but there is plenty of additional info out there. Have fun! Pete

Re: Passage from Virgin Islands to Florida

I solo sailed my Benneteau 32.5 form the BVIs to Florida a few years ago from late May through June. Overall a great trip. The Mono passage and DR we're probably the most challenging. A few squalls and one tropical storm in late June in the Abacos.
