power or sail
coastal or passagemaker?
You'll need 5 cabins assuming the teens wish their own (??)
Like many things, it depends

That large a family suggests a cat. A monohull that would be comfortable and allow everyone a degree of privacy would be very large indeed.

That's a challenge but possible; how many cabins do you need? One option is an older charter boat, lots of cabins; understand that we cruise on a 60' ketch that 'sleeps two.' That is, we have our stateroom, a nice guest cabin for visitors with bunk beds and head, and other cabins that don't have berths (office, shop, etc). Look at the French boats as they tend to have more cabins. For example: http://www.bluenoseyachts.com/wp-con...ntcabAvjpg.jpg

Depends entirely on whether the kids are passengers or partners. Teens used to regularly be at sea and having a bunk was sufficient.

Yes this boat seems to have the sleeping capacity but what about storage? Especially live aboard for any period of time with that many times. Bunks are an excellent suggestion for teens but also figure out the bare necessities for each passenger to make life comfortable and then add 15% - trust me you will under estimate what you need. Then consider where and how all that will be stored? For clothing, bedding and towels for each consider investing in those space bags that you vacuum seal. It works for dirty laundry as well. Also in such tight quarters assign tasks for each person to perform while on board to keep the boat tidy and clean.

Need a lot more info to give you some intelligent advice. What's your budget? How old are you and the teens? Where do you want to take the boat? What kind of activities do you like to do, you and the teens? What's your prior sailing experience?

Budget is the big question. Are you looking to spend $50,000, $150,000, or $1,500,000?

What happened to the woman... whose name I forgot... who was looking for a boat for her family of 4 (IIRC) children and her mother to live aboard? Last I recall she got a large motor yacht (Hatteras???) and was in Boston.

Any news from her?

Found her...Galaxy Gavin with 5 kids and her mother. Seems like she is selling or has sold the boat and is not going to get a land cruiser and travel the country....
