Re: SSB ICOM-706 marine transceiver

The Icom IC-706 is a HAM radio, NOT a marine radio. It came in at least three versions: the 706, the 706MKII, and the 706MKIIG. These are widely available on the used market.

While these radios can be modified to operate outside the ham bands -- e.g., on the marine bands -- it is illegal to use them to transmit on other than the ham bands.

The only exception is in an extreme (life-threatening) emergency.

Re: SSB ICOM-706 marine transceiver

I know the guy I bought the boat from was a ham. If the radio was modified to work on public marine bands I honestly don't know. I think it was because he talked about using it to talk and some sailor nets. I will try and find for sure.

Re: SSB ICOM-706 marine transceiver

Talked today with the previous owner of the transceiver and he couldn't remember if he had it modified to work on marine bands. He thought it had but he wasn't sure. Anyway if it hasn't been done it's pretty easy to do and at a very low cost.

Re: SSB ICOM-706 marine transceiver

FWIW, there are many marine nets that operate on the HAM bands. The radio didn't need to be "opened to SSB" to participate in HAM bands. If previous owner was a HAM, he probably didn't operate illegally the radio on the marine SSB frequencies.
