Recommend a school in SE Asia?

I'm a Brit working in China, and figure that my best chance to learn to sail is to start off with an RYA course down in Thailand or elsewhere in SE Asia. Can anyone make a recommendation? Competent crew or day skipper would be a good start. I'm a teacher, so I have a window in the summer and again in the winter at Chinese New Year. If I can fit something in, then I can visit a sailing club back home on the Humber next summer and try to get things moving.

Thanks!

Hello! I did most of the online courses on www.nauticed.org before I booked my RYA Day Skipper in the UK. NauticeEd has a list of schools worldwide that you can use, maybe worth a check.

Thanks, everyone. I'll check those out. The flight from Guangzhou to Thailand is only two hours, so if there is somewhere good in Phuket or Langkawi that would be ideal.

The Land of Smiles would be lots of fun, but not hold much credibility afaic.

Ex-UK like Singapore, Hong Kong likely to be more demanding.

Really! explain what makes you an expert on this. That's borderline slander. John, you should really refrain posting just to post. Have you ever been to a sailing school in Thailand or hold a IYT or RYA rating?

there are several very good, ACCREDITED, sailing schools in SE Asia.

The RYA one in Langkawi is very well reviewed and been in business for a long time with professional instructors. It's seasonal and books up fast.

There is Java Yachting, operated year-round out of Krabi/ Phuket owned by John Coffin a master mariner and IYT examiner; it is excellent. they have a connection with China and Chinese speaking staff. They also have boats to charter and regularly participate in regattas. I have had dealings with John in the past and he is a fantastic guy and runs a super professionally outfit

There is another IYT school a small one on the other side of Thailand.

As far as I know there isnt a school in Singapore -

Thailand is perfect for competent crew or day skipper.

OK, good to know.

Langkawi isn't LoS btw.

And slander, against a whole country LOL, let's say OK an unfair generalization.

Love the place, but stringent standards of professionalism aren't too evident there. Some professions are bound to have exceptions of course. . .

SG Keppel Bay is RYA btw

There are a number of other schools in the countries mentioned.

Re: Recommend a school in SE Asia?

Thanks! I've emailed the Langkawi one and Java yachting. We'll see how it goes! I assume that any RYA school is good enough, and recommendations are more useful for places like the IYT one that I wouldn't otherwise have so much faith in.

There is a two-fold reason for participating in a recognized school. One, the qualification, and two, learning to sail right the first time...

Most of the schools have ex-pats teaching. For more info just use Rabbi Google and investigate to your satisfaction.

Good luck with your search and eventual choice!

Hi. I was just looking at this site! What are your overall impressions? I'm sort of concerned about dedicating that much time during my vacation. There's a lot of other things I'd like to do while in LOS.
