Whitby 55' Ketch

Anybody here sail on a Whitby 55' Ketch? I am looking for how you felt about it. I understand it is a old heavy cruising boat, not a modern cruiser/racer, but it does seem to have a tall mast and carry a lot of sail area.

How does she sail in 15 knots apparent on the beam? When does she need to be reefed? Difficult to pole out the genoa with such a large sail? Ever been in a blow on her? How about steerage in a marina and backing up? Do the typical bow thrusters work well on it?

Re: Whitby 55' Ketch

talk to s/v moonraker. He has a Tayana 55 and knows people with big boats.
Whitbys are fine boats but had blister problems on their hulls. Research the hull number to see if the issue affects your boat. Consider carefully the costs of sails that large which are exponential from 44 to 48 to 52 to 55 feet. There is one in Trinidad for 115,000. Pics aren't bad. Its been there a while. You might snag is cheap.

I went with the Tayana 55 Schooner instead. I feel safer about this choice. Will have the survey done next week with fingers crossed.
