window seals EDPM or Silicone?

I need to replace all my port and hatch seals but dont have any long term experience with EDPM or silicone gaskets and am not sure what was originally used?

Anyone familiar with which one might hold up better / longer in salt water environment?

Re: window seals EDPM or Silicone?

Sorry...to clarify i'm talking about EDPM and silicone foam rubber weather stripping, not caulking.

EPDM was my original equipment and what I replaced them with a couple years ago. The originals lasted 32 years.

Hi
I had good luck with this stuff:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and the glue https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

both purchased from Amazon.com

I did the job last fall and so far this spring the portlights seem to have kept out the rain/snow

That's EPDM.
The important thing is to get the profile and size correct. There is no need to bother with contact cement if you purchase the Bomar product (if it fits your application) as it has a contact strip already applied. Just peel and press.

Hey thanks Jim. That was going to be my next question. I found the gasket at McMaster Carr but it doesnt have the adhesive backing.

Before you go ordering things, it helps if you can find out the Shore Number of the original gasket. Which is a figure that specifies how hard it is/how much it compresses under X amount of force. So that the dogs on your hatches & ports will work well in conjunction with the new material, without exceeding their range of adjustment.
