Dyneema rigging replacing stainless steel

Hi All

Anyone had experience of this?

As I have a catamaran the idea of loosing some weight up top appeals.

Re: Dyneema rigging replacing stainless steel

Hi,

generally it works, I have it on my cat.

Get the prestretched dyneema & if you splice it yourself around the proper terminal eyelets, keep in mind that the splices might set in a bit at the start.
This means your shrouds get slightly elongated.

Personally I have lashings to the chainplates, but sometimes think turnbuckles might make adjusting easier on a cruising boat.

Alternatively I have a line to tighten the shrouds by pulling them together.
The lashings tend to settle in as well, thats why I use the extra line.

Here is one source: Products - Hampiđjan Group
Fairly priced. I'd try to find out what is needed in terms of strength and than buy this material from the fishing rather than yachting section.
Usually ropes are cheaper when bought in large quantities.

Good luck!

Re: Dyneema rigging replacing stainless steel

I went through this when replacing my rigging. The conclusion I came to is that it is more expensive and doesn't quite perform as advertised. Unless you're racing on a really light boat, it's not worth it. For cruising, I think you're better off sticking with wire. And then there's this worrying about some pissed off guy with a machete!
Seriously, I don't want to be in the middle of the pacific in 30 knots of wind and have to tighten my rigging.

Hi

Thank you for the replies.

I'm going to ponder this for a bit.

Cheers

Re: Dyneema rigging replacing stainless steel

There has been lots of discussion about the bend ratio and the eye-splice angle.
Here is a pic...

Is this ok?
The bend ratio seems ok 1:1 (94% strength or so)...but how about the eye splice? should be 3:1 (pref. 5:1)?
