Avalon to Dana Point

Hey Guys,

I'm new to the forum and still green to sailing. I've got a Catalina 270 and will be making a Catalina trip on 4/15. I've heard talk of an "Oceanside Hook" being the best sailing course from Avalon back to Dana Point. The thing is I don't know how far to travel towards Oceanside before making the turn towards Dana Point.

Anyone have coordinates, suggestions, ideas?

Thanks for the help

We made that trip a hundred times. Never heard of this and someone might be pulling your leg. Most times we motored over and back because of no wind. Otherwise, you sail with the wind you got, if you want to sail. We always sailed to West End to avoid all the touristy stuff at Avalon. Ours was a 27 also. Chuck

Avalon to Dana Point: 65.7M, 31.35 miles. With NW winds, I'd sail straight towards Dana Point. It's 5 or 6 hours - if you leave in the morning you'll be motoring until the wind builds, then a nice beam reach to Data Point. Enjoy your trip!

Re: Avalon to Dana point

The current runs southward between Catalina and the mainland so I think heading toward Oceanside is only going to make you sail up current even more as you cross.

Never heard of the Oceanside Hook, but then we had the boat in Oceanside.
