Purchased a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 409 in November. What maintenance is next?

Hey guys!

Learning a lot from this forum and hopefully I can be of some service to others with my past experiences and knowledge. However, vessel maintenance is something I'm lacking. I purchased a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 409 back in November 2016 and was wondering what maintenance is next. What should I test every morning during a trip? What about before I leave for a few days? Oil changes? Transmission fluid? Impeller?

Any tips/hints/suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

There is Jeanneau Owners Forum that is quite good at

Home | Jeanneau Owners Network Forum

We have a 2001 launched 2003 and have been full time liveaboard/curisers for over 9 years and what a great boat

we have a routine each morning before setting out -- oil, water, general over look of the engine but have a detailed over view on a periodic basis based on the parts - the manual has a good starting point

You need some check lists:

On arrival, turning on gas, electrics seacocks etc.

On departure turning off gas, electrics, seacocks and empty fridge etc

Before starting the engine, carry out first parade, oil, water, fuel, alternator belt etc and any seacocks!

On shut down of engine etc.

After a while the checks become routine but will help ensure you don't miss anything and as you drive away wonder did you shut the gas off

Find every single through hull/skin fitting. Identify it's size, function, & location. Including within cabinetry in space X. Draw a diagram of the ship, & denote all of these fittings on it, along with their exact location, & what they're for. Make 2 laminated copies, & permanently affix one to the inside lid of the nav desk. With the 2nd copy going into the binder containing all of the notes, & equipment manuals for the ship.

When you're ID'ing all of the through hulls, also tie a tapered wooden plug to each one with a piece of cordage. And make a habit of regularly inspecting all of these fittings. Including their hoses & hose clamps.

Address any issues in the survey.

Check fuel filter and know how to change it. Carry spare filters, impeller and belts.
Change fluids if you don't know their age. Carry extra.
Look for chafing on sails and running rigging.
Check zincs periodically.
read the other posts here - all good.

This is so obvious that you probably already have done it, but you will want an engine log notebook*. In it you date and list what you've done. If you haven't changed the oil in the engine, and the oil filter, of course, that should be done before you leave the slip, unless you know for certain it has a fresh oil change in it. Keeping the oil good is the least expensive and possibly most important thing you can do for your engine. If you don't have one, install an engine hours meter, that is how you will determine when the next oil change will be.

*In it goes all the maintenance information, including parts numbers for some items. You'll work it out what you want as you think about it.

+1 on map of through hulls... while doing that make note of any through hulls you might have trouble pounding a bung into (i.e. if they're behind a really tight cabinet)... I have one like that and am contemplating adding a hatchet to the "emergency" bag so I can wack away the cabinetry if I REALLY need to.

As already mentioned by others, consider checklists (I'm a big checklist kind of guy, no matter how many times I go through something I always seem to forget). Your checklist will become custom after a while, and it will depend on how often you're using the boat etc.

We come from a long way away when we sail (we're commuter boating right now) and our boat sits for long periods with no use, so our checklist is going to be different from yours, but happy to share ours as starting points.

SPRING/ANNUAL CHECKLIST:
•VISUALLY INSPECT ALL HOSE CLAMPS
•LUBE THROUGH HULLS
•WATER TEST BILGE PUMP
•TEST BILGE ALARM
•TEST CO & PROPANE DETECTORS
•CHANGE SMOKE DETECTOR BATTERIES
•INSPECT PFD’S
•CLEAN AND GREASE BATTERY TERMINALS

•EXERCISE & OPEN THROUGH HULLS
•CHECK BILGE
•TEST BILGE PUMP & HIGH WATER ALARM
•CHECK DOCKING LINES, HALYARDS FOR CHAFE
•CHECK BATTERY WATER LEVEL
•CHECK MOUSING WIRE ON ANCHOR SHACKLES X 2
•CHECK OIL, TRANSMISSION OIL, COOLANT, BELT
•INSTALL SPEED IMPELLER
•INSPECT ZINC IN HEAT EXCHANGER
•CLEAN SEA STRAINER
•REMOVE STRAPS FROM HEADSAIL
•INSPECT SHORE POWER CORD
•INSPECT AND MARK FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

Yes. I had Caribbean Marine Surveyors (BVI) Ltd. : British Virgin Islands & the Caribbean survey the vessel back in November.

Great checklist, basssears!!! Just copied/pasted/printed it and placed in my binder.

I surprised the big check list posted by basssears didn't have it but if you have a dripless shaft seal you should lube it about every 100 hours or so. I do mine once a year. you can get the tool and lube from Volvo I think and it takes 2 minutes to do it. Just spread the lube on the little plastic tool and shove it in from the inside. I always do oil, filters, and shaft seal on any boat I am unsure of the maintenance before I will do a delivery

We also keep a log but put a piece of tape we can write on and put the date and engine hours on the filter itself so as I take a quick look at the engine before setting I know when we last did it and if we need to start thinking of doing it again

One of the first things I did after we bought our boat was to make a laminated "Leaving the boat" checklist. We use a dry-erase marker on it.

I also made a small, red placard that says, "Engine coolant seacock is closed" that hangs inside the engine console. I can't start the engine without seeing/removing the placard.
