That's a great and innovative design. It was elected this year's European boat of the year and for that it was extensively tested (as the other nominated boats) by testers from all major European sail magazines and one of the test days some got it with a rough sea and that's where the boat worked better.

The testers from Norway were among those and said: "In a decent breeze it makes 7K upwind and it is surprisingly dry even in rough seas. The Oceanis 38 fell safe and is easy to sail."

This "marina" boat will out sail almost all oldies with the same size and bigger and will do that sailing with a surprisingly small amount of heel. It is not surprising the boat to be easy to sail since the hull is based on the hull of Open boats, that have that shape to allow them to be more stable and easy, allowing a solo sailor to race them. The designers of the O38 are specialists in Open racing boats and also in fast cruising boats with hulls from the same family, for instance the Pogo 10.50.

The real small handicap of that boat is the performance in very light winds were while being faster than most older boats is still not as good as some other modern mass production cruisers of that size.

I like the open feel, but realistically, why have the "bedroom" open? Why have the head so far away from the Berth? I guess maybe it just has one head.
Funny, it's an old fashioned galley-on-the-side design. Nobody wanted that when the U shape came out. For local cruising it could be a nice design though I suppose.

Yes I know that. But when you set the bulkhead up, there is very little space in the main cabin, and in the salon the wall just looks very plain, due to the modularity. Most people buying this boat are likely buying it with the intention of keeping the living space open, like a studio apartment.

This boat screams "dock queen." I would hate to be below decks while underway. Too many sharp edges just waiting to say "hello!" when you get thrown across the cabin in a seaway.

80% of the sailboats hardly ever leave the dock and for those that do they are seldom further away than a couple of hours. Benni knows this and is designing boats that fit the use profile of most buyers.

Far as I have been unscientifically been able to prove over the years 80% of ALL boats hardy travel far.............PERIOD! Has nothing to do with boat brands and the 20% of boats that do travel is just about the owners on their.

My point is, while I agree the vast majority of boats will rarely if ever do more than daysail, the layout down below precludes you from ever doing more than that. Business wise, Bene is pretty smart. They understand how most boats are used and build them with that in mind. To me though, and this is purely personal preference, I want a boat that I'm comfortable taking offshore. I wouldn't be in that boat. At least not while I'm below deck.

But when this boat does sail (for hours, days, or weeks) the design premise suggests she will carry her crew in an innovative and stylish fashion inside and out. For almost each downside, you can find a balance that the designers addressed.

Funnily stacks of Benny's cross oceans, so perhaps their crew hold on better then you of something ( of course it could be that your concerns are merely preconceived and perceived issues )

Where to stow remove able bulkhead?

The flexibility of this design for a new boat (possibly even 2nd hand depending on where PO places aft bulkhead) gives large storage space in aft cabin not yet fitted with a bed. Yes, I know this is my personal configuration for ideal single couple cruiser with limited guests (they can sleep on salon couches). This config = guests don't overstay their welcome, bulkhead stowage, bikes and dive gear, workbench, pantry. Note the starboard side, cockpit accessed deep storage compartment on the other side of the bulkhead.
