Most frequent lie encountered while cruising

I'll start off:

Most frequent lie encountered: at just about every marina, "yes we have wifi and yes it works" ... not

Re: Most frequent lie encountered while cruising

you have at least 6 feet of water at low tide in the channel and the marina. No worries!!! Come on in.

"Look, I'll tell you honestly, You just can't go to sea without spending $X,000 on this essential piece of xxxxx"

Most Recent time said: One this forum a few days ago where a Raymarine Dude said I do things so badly I should have him do all my work at $100 per hour

If I ever paid for everything I have been told is Essential I would have never been able to start my circumnavigation, let alone finish it!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Most frequent lie encountered while cruising

A guy at a local ship chandler attempted to convince me that

1) A bottle of Propane was a bottle of Butane
1b) That Propane and Butane are the same thing.

At Marina's:

1) Staff walks the dock regularly
2) Staff keeps an eye on boats and lines
3) Bathrooms are cleaned "x" frequency

People who claim to be cruisers and/or like to be identified as an experienced boater, yet their boat never leaves the dock or mooring.... if in fact they even own, rent or have the use of one.

I was sailing my cruising cat the other day on a broad reach in 18kts of wind. I tell you, I was getting 22kts boat speed.

"No we don't use much diesel per season at all. We sail about 80% of the time and only motor about 20%"

Re: Most frequent lie encountered while cruising

How some describe their vessel... perhaps best defined in the Sailing Pocket Dictionary by Henry Beard & Roy McKie:

Quote:
Yacht: Any recreational craft whose owner or user is not responsible for her upkeep, or whose owner recognizes sufficient tax benefits from his ownership to defray all operating expenses. Also commonly used to describe any boat prior to its purchase, and by many boat owners to describe their vessel to persons who have never seen it and are never likely to do so...
Cheers! Bill

Marina: We have potable water!

Fine print: When it works, but don't drink it!
