Newbies from Alaska!

Greetings! After years of dreaming (I think that is a requirement), my husband and I are suddenly the new owners of a 30 foot Hunter, named "Perspective" located in Seward, Alaska.

We are 45 & 46, almost empty-nesters, and live in Wasilla, AK.

We have already appreciated the wealth of knowledge to be gleaned from this forum, and look forward to continued support now that we have something specific to talk about!

Re: Newbies from Alaska!

Howdy and Welcome Aboard CF!

Alaska is such a GREAT place! What a wonderful place to have a boat.

There are several CF members in Alaska.

There are also some "social groups" that are more focused on special interests, and as I saw, they can be fun for their members.

Cruisers & Sailing Forums - All Groups

Here are a couple you might find interesting:

Mermaids Group (206 members)
It is for women sailors and boat owners. It has 206 members. Cruisers & Sailing Forums - ~~Mermaids Group~~

Pacific Coast Sailors Group (74 members)
Cruisers & Sailing Forums - Pacific Coast Sailors

WIKI
And, make sure you check out the Cruising WIKI that is found via the tab up on the top menu bar of the forum. It has a LOT of information in it you might find fun, interesting, or helpful. It has cruising guides too.

Looking for Quick Answers?

This is the best and fastest method I have found to the answers I seek here.
Since you are relatively new to the forum, here is my favorite friendly forum search tip: Look at the green menu bar on the forum pages for the drop down "Search" menu. Click on that to drop down a list of search functions. From that drop down menu select the GOOGLE CUSTOM search feature (the second box down) and then enter several different descriptive terms for your topic of interest. That will do a Custom google search of ONLY this site and it is likely to find answers to your questions or results for you. Note: this is different from using the regular forum search box or field. Also note, this is NOT found if you use the CF app. It IS found if you use a web browser such as Safari, etc.

Re: Newbies from Alaska!

I would love to cruise Alaska, but getting the boat there would be a real chore. I guess the solution is to purchase a boat in Alaska to make a cruise.

Re: Newbies from Alaska!

Congratulations on your new boat, AKshanmar, and welcome to the forum!

I kept a boat in Seward many years ago [right before the coal loading facility was built...] I tried Whittier as well [back when the train was the only option through the tunnel...] and ultimately settled on Valdez for several years.

You have a great area to explore while becoming familiar with your new boat, and are 'just around the corner' from Prince William Sound when you get ready to stretch your wings...

Best wishes with your journey, and safe travels.

Cheers!

Bill

Re: Newbies from Alaska!

Bill-
Thanks for the positive encouragement. Sailing in Alaska is a whole different can of worms than most people's idea of sailing! I was visiting with someone from FL, and she couldn't imagine sailing in anything more than a bikini... layers of neoprene, raincoats, hats, and gloves.... was beyond her comprehension.

We almost bought a boat in Whittier, but are really glad we settled on Seward. The drive to get to our boat is and hour and a half longer, but it is nice to have services when we get there, and the sailing is much better. (I kind of miss the giant shrimp outside of Whittier however!)

We are looking forward to more sailing this summer... maybe I'll get to wear a long sleeve t-shirt a day or two!

And for the Woman in your party, I suggest joining Facebook groups: Women Who Sail, and Women Who Sail in the Pacific Northwest. Both are terrific sources of female (only, closed groups) information, and comradery.

Hope to meet up! As soon as we get things wound up here on land we are hoping to sail south by fall.

Re: Newbies from Alaska!

Hey our boat is in Seward as well. We crossed from Japan this year. We are down in the lower 48 now trying to earn some beer money for cruising this summer. We plan to be back in Seward in April sometime. Hopefully catch up with you then.

Cheers
