What Do YOU Enjoy in a Sailing Blog ?

Ok, so my wife and I prepare for our own cruising life, we have been reading blogs our fellow cruisers have posted for those of us to enjoy and learn form.

Perusing many threads of our fellow cruisers opinions, some friendly and some perhaps with a touch of narrow mindedness and jealousy. I want to pose a questions to everyone.

When you read others blogs, what are the topics, features, articles, media you enjoy and what do you find takes away from your enjoyment.

I know there are some opinionnated individuals out there who would have some great points to add.

I myself enjoy the pictures, the stories, and the tips. I could do without the mundane daily life details, and I wish you could be here's. What I have not seen enough of yet would be irreverent humour, and subdued wit.

What are your thoughts?

Re: What do YOU enjoy in a Sailing Blog?

I agree about the mundane life stuff. Some blogs seem more like a personal diary and have daily trivia about what was eaten, what movies were watched, etc. They seem to go on and on and on and ...

There are a very few good irreverent and witty ones (bumfuzzle, slapdash), but they are difficult to pull off unless you are actually irreverent and witty (to others, not yourself).

Michele does our blog, and I like it. It isn't a daily thing - she makes entries when the creative mood strikes her and focuses the entries around a narrow topic or event. She keeps it simple with few words and lots of pictures. Kind of like giving "tastes" of our cruising life. It could be improved by having more technical entries and descriptions of boat work, but she gave me that job and I am too busy doing boat work and technical stuff to write it up.

Re: What do YOU enjoy in a Sailing Blog?

I enjoy getting to know other people through their writing and connecting with them. I enjoy the knowledge you can gain about cruising and the art of boat work/maintenance. I like being able to see that it is possible to do the things that scare me or that confound me.

There are a lot of ways to accomplish all of that. I like to read a mix of the "life's mundane details", the big philosophers, and the witty story tellers. Throw in some stuff to just keep up to date on.

No one blog style can satisfy all my needs, and why should it. Its like asking what is your favorite type of book, I read a ton of different styles and enjoy all of them.

Re: What do YOU enjoy in a Sailing Blog?

Our blog is primarily for friends and family. They want to know how the daily stuff is going so we include it. If someone who is not close to us reads it, they probably feel the same way you do, that they could do without the mundane.

We always love pictures. Good ones are best but even some of the record shots (look Ma, here I am with another Forum member) are appreciated.

Always like to read how things go with local authorities. Love to hear about interaction with other cruisers and especially with the general population, language barrier solutions, etc.

Our perfect day...

I wake as there is light in the sky and put the coffee on.

By the time Nell is up, the anchor is hauled short and the main is up.

Nell comes up with the coffee and by dawn the anchor is up and...

We are on our way to the next place we have never visited before!

A day, a week or even a month later we arrive at our new temporary home!

I love reading the blog of Slapdash. Seth is a twisted person.

Good photos, some videos, a bit of adventure will spice up a blog. Some people can express themselves in print, and some can't. Same as some can tell a joke, and another person just can't get the same joke to be funny.

Many I read I don't get past the first page. And many writers don't get past the first page. I've manage some 50+ pages, but it is more therapy for me than anything else. Even though very little is about my health......i2f

Pictures with short notes. Occasional longer story. not a lot of monologues though...

Welcome to the forum Eagerbeaver.

Great idea for a thread. We all enjoy reading well written stuff about sailing and the cruising life.
Truth is anyone can start a blog and anyone can string sentences together.
Unfortunately not everyone can really write.

Apart from getting pointers to make your own blog interesting, hopefully this thread will also highlight a few entertaining blogs some of us haven't found yet.

It has to be interesting. That is the bottom line. Excellent writing is a must.

I like stories...something with some humor in it helps.
