Re: Couple rescued from deserted island.

I learned a geography lesson. I was unaware that the US had islands accociated with it there. Was wondering why a US Navy Ship and US Coast Gaurd were involved?

Anyone know how dangerous these islands are. Are there Snakes, Crocs, or bugs on those island? How much rain/fresh water can be found.

A good ending to the story for sure, else we could have had another 'Castaway' situation.

Re: Couple rescued from deserted island.

Lived in Pohnpei for a number of years while it was still part of the US Trust Territory of the Pacific. US is still responsible for defense of the Federated States of Micronesia and USCG and USN traffic is not uncommon. Guam and the Northern Marianas are not that far north.

If you have to be stranded somewhere, the FSM is not a bad spot. Plenty of rain (dry season is relative), usually lots of edibles in the jungle and lots of fish and mollusks. Springs and flowing water are found in many areas although less common on the "low islands" No snakes except the Blind Snake which are commonly mistaken for large earth worms.

As found throughout the Marshal Islands Micronesia and the Marianas, Turkey Fish (Lion Fish), Stone Fish, Sea Snakes, and the occasional salt water croc may make water adventures a bit exciting.

Island I lived on, one lightbulb cost you $1.00 a month, 2 lightbulbs cost $2.00 a month... Came on at sunset and went off when the guy who owned the generator went to bed

Re: Couple rescued from deserted island.

They were going 160 miles in an 18 foot dinghy, single engine, NO SERIOUS SIZE FUEL TANK!

They are a bit bloody lucky

And people keep telling us how good mariners the Pacific Islanders are! FFS.

From the photos it looks like they took off in an 18' panga type boat. The same sort of boat (albeit 8' shorter) that you see Central American fisherman 50+ miles offshore in all the time.

Nope, such journeys are not uncommon around Micronesia/Melanesia.

Yup pretty much business as usual.
They had a hut built.
The searchers saw lights initially, not sos in sand until next day. Did they have flashlight or build a fire ?
Reporters always leave a bit to be desired . Always.
