Hello from British Columbia

Hello Cruisersforum. My name is James and I have a big wood cutter called Mischief. Sometimes I even get to sail her. This summer we sailed her from Mexico to British Columbia where we are getting into (the 2nd) refit.

Hello from Qualicum Beach, my boat moored in Comox but up on the hard as I speak for refit. What year is your boat?

Thanks for the welcome. She was built in 1964 by Marco shipyard in Seattle to a John Atkin & Jay Benford design. She was designed and built for a sailmaker named Rupert Broom and apparently he liked to go out in heavy weather because the boat is ridiculously overbuilt. We are enjoying sailing the big cutter a great deal although bringing her to the Pacific Northwest in the wintertime has revealed that while the decks and houses may be Good Enough for Mexico they are not for this part of the world! So that will be a big project coming up.

Does the boat have heat? I used to do a lot of cruising from Pt. Roberts over to Friday Harbour in Oct - April, all the sailing done at night, often arriving at two or three in the morning. The boat was a CT, another heavily ocean oriented boat, but good for these areas in the off season; in the summer, light or no winds.

She came with a Dickinson Pacific diesel cookstove in the middle of the boat. It's been running full time since we got to BC.. The middle of the boat is warm but the ends are cold and damp. I'm thinking of adding a hot water coil to the diesel stove and a big hot water tank beside it.. Then run lines to little radiators in the ends of the boat with 12v fans on them. This involves adding at least 2 pumps, a pressure water system, finding a nice copper water tank, etc.

That's a lot of complication to set up a central heating system. Just for what it's worth, it triggered a memory of my old dad and a summer cottage in Sweden. Wood burning stove and he ducted the dry heated air to two or three rooms. Worked a treat.
