Listen Jaspers: For several hundred years I mean most of my life the name for that was a worm shoe. I've replaced many while working in boatyards.

Yes indeed. My 23' hulls were like 6" wide. Great for thru 1-2' Gulf surf. But OP's boat ought be be somewhat more weatherly. I'd trade lives with him.

I have a large leeboard on my 32' cat...though it's not a Wharram, it's very light and very shallow...and it works a treat. She is much more weatherly than I expected, especially with the negative reports on some biplane rigs. MY problem is I tend to point her higher than I ought, and my VMG falls off. She prefers a loose close reach over all other points of sail, both for speed and seakindliness.

As is human nature, there is a downside to the extreme shallow draft I tend to push my luck anyway, and have twice found bottom with my rudders lol luckily they just kick up.

I'm a big fan of the Tikis and likely will build one for my next boat when I don't need space for 3 kids! Nice work man

Re: wharram tiki 26 voyaging?

@ gordo these boats are easy to build. I had not used a skill saw, jig saw or any other carpentry tools at all. I actually learned to use them on the job, but is was not long before i was scarfing plywood joints with a plane.

Another bonus with these boats is that you can build them in narrow spaces, ie the porch on my man cave. I used three cheap plastic tables for the build and had no fancy workshop at all. In fact some of these boats have been built in the jungle.

Now that the build is nearly complete all i need to do is find a few tawny eyed hippie chicks....

Doing pretty much that (with a TIKI 21) is on my wish list at some point in the dim and distant future. Ok, it's probably more of a day dream than a plan , but yer never know......

My above plan involves maidens on the dusky end of the spectrum - eyes as black as coal . Back to SEA, mmmmmm .

I lost track of how many trans-Atlantic trips he did on small boats all less than 30 feet and all built by himself, including a couple of cats and a trimaran too. There was never a lot of fuss in what he did. One day I would get a letter from him in the Azores or some such place mentioning that he would be back in the next spring, and then I would see him the next year up in New England. I don't believe he even carried a VHF radio onboard. He used nothing but a sextant and a compass and a lead line on all of his trips. His auxiliary power on one boat was something like a 3 HP outboard, but I think most of them carried no motor.
I started reading the book today and in the introduction there is mention of a certain Kettlewell, is that your good self?

That is I--I'll have to reread what he said to see if I should change my name.

Salti,

Good on you mate!!!

Nice work on the boat!!!

Your post having something to do with Dux rigging (different thread) got me going on the Wharram designs. Ive been having a bit of fun researching the boats. Just ordered up a few study plans.........

Go for it...... and keep us posted.

Re: wharram tiki 26 voyaging?

Thanks mate. The building of my boat has given me a massive dose of confidence in my own abilities and also an awareness of my limitations.

Which wharram holds your interest? What I do love about this design is that if you really wanted to you could avoid marine chandelery shops all together for the construction, saving heaps.

I have been making lashing pads out of hardwood to protect the beams. Also have made a simple dolphin striker with the dyneema rope yesterday.

The 30 looks like a great boat.

The 38 as well. Tho I would be tempted to tone down the 38 a bit.....Sloop rig and less accommodation . Once there is too much stuff on board you loose performance and she begins to resemble a barge.

Do you know of any 38 out there that are sloop rigged?
