VHF/AIS Combos.

Im sorry if this already ben covered here.
im curious about these combo AIS/VHF units.
Im really after a simple solution to having an AIS. I already need a fixed VHF and i know you can buy AIS/VHF.
Can people let me know about these and what needs to be done?

Re: VHF/AIS Combos.

ICOM M605 VHF offers optional AIS. Don't know much about it, whether tranceiver or receive only, etc... didn't need that option.

Re: VHF/AIS Combos.

We’ve got a standard horizon matrix 2200 ais/vhf.

Note it’s not a transponder, but receive only.

Out of the box, it’ll need you to enter your mmsi as well as connect a source of position data. I purchased a nema 0183 gps puck and a 12v-5v power supply to dedicate to the radio.

Re: VHF/AIS Combos.

We have a SH unit (passive). It is great. I would buy again.

It uses one antena with the vhf. It needs gps nmea signal feed. It needs mmsi typed in to function in full DSC (red button active) mode.

Next thing I am buying an active one in a combo.

We also have an older SH handheld. Also brilliant kit.

Re: VHF/AIS Combos.

I had a Lowrance Link8 radio interfaced with Simrad displays over NMEA2000 on my last boat. It worked great. AIS targets showed on the chart, as well as the radar screen. Targets were selectable on the screen and I could see details or hail via DSC.
