Looking at these two...

Two sides of the same coin. Jeanneau is a wholly owned subsidiary of Beneteau. So build quality should be similar. Interiors likewise.

How lovely to be able to choose one of these. Have you had an opportunity closely to examine either or both? Is there a layout or equipment type that will best suit your needs and sailing style? Have you found that one is simply easier to get off the dock and sail (might make a big difference over time)? Does one just make your heart beat faster?

You might be able to find a dealer that will count the charter fee for the same model into the purchase price if you buy one. That could give you some low cost evaluation time.

Thanks, and yes, we have looked at both. Not quite side-by-side, but close. I think we are leaning toward the Beneteau 48 for the nicer master suite, connection/feel to the water in back and the massive swim platform.

That said, I would really prefer a lightly (4-7yrs) used boat and the Oceanis has not been around long enough.

Loved the 48, just don't want to take the "new boat" depreciation if I can avoid it.

Also, don't know if the difference between 48 and 51 puts us into a different slip category in some marinas....eg 40'-50' vs 50'-60'.

Price break on the used boat is only about ten percent...surprisingly.

I think they are both fantastic, and they are also two of the boats on my short list. Just depends on what your priorities are. I've been aboard both of them, but never sailed.

Beneteau 48:

Fantastic shower in the owner's cabin, although not so fantastic if you or your partner are shy

I like the arrangement with the traveller on top of the arch too.

Swim platform is superior.

Jeanneau 509:

Small dressing table in the main cabin, which is VERY useful.

Much better nav desk in the salon.

Windows are closer to eye level in the cabins, and I like the airplane style sliding shades.

Love both and saw them side by side in annapolis. I have jeanneau 42ds and going to beneteau sense 50. Just a matter of choice. Don't let new boat scare you. Boating is expensive. Having had sailboats for more than 40 years now I have lost more on used boats I bought by upgrading more than the resale market would bear. For me the oceanis has a laughably small fuel and water capacity. The sense has four times as much fuel and a watermaker. My cruising ground is Southern California and Baja. I have a 1000 mile motor north each year so I need the fuel.
