Still searching-What about the Pearson coaster 30

We're back for more input. We've been reading reviews and looking at boats on line, trying to thin out and narrow down what we're looking at. Then this Pearson Coaster came up for sale nearby. It's on the hard and the seller seems very eager. It's had some upgrades and is only needing some sanding and painting of the hull and perhaps a replacement of the rudder. We won't make a decision without a survey, but need to know if this boat would be worth that. It seems very solid, full keel, sails very good condition, new rigging, steering vane, nice low fuel diesel. It was cold and icy when we looked and need to go back and have a deeper look. Would it be considered strong and sufficient for some off shore sailing? It can stay where it is for any work we'd need to do on it.

Thanks for that link! It's very helpful. We're going to go look at the boat again today if its not sold and take an experienced friend to look it over with us. He's only asking $4k for the boat and its in a place where you can work on it yourself so any work needing to be done would be easy for access and the fees to have it on the hard are low with unlimited in and out of the water. It's 1 hr or so from our house so sounds good.

you need to sail em before ye think about ruling boats out.. each marque has a different bunch of characteristics not written in reviews.
clipper marine looked good in reviews, until uscg labelled them most unsafe boat in any body of water.....
it is fun to look for boats when it is done in person. more realistic. better learning experiences.
look at derelicts on hard as well as in water boats just to learn about them.
is a fun process.

Well we did it we bought the coaster! We took an experienced friend with us and he spent the whole way home telling us all the good things about the boat. It's on the hard and we will be painting top sides and bottom sides and whatever else til feb and then putting it in the water. This is the next step for a dream to spend some months on the water cruising the San Juan and Gulf Islands and on to Alaska and who knows where else.
the extra electronics and gear on the boat are more than worth the price as well as the nice atomic 4 diesel mini. Exciting day for us!!
Sometimes life moves fast, just when we were ready to be patient and just keep the New Moon for now and wait for the stouter boat!!
Anyone looking for a nice antique woody to restore?

Great! I like the general design. The Atomic 4 is a gas engine though right? Also, as long as she's out of the water, give the rudder, prop shaft, packing and cutlass a good look too.

I was looking at one on Ebay (or maybe CR) recently and thought it would be a great boat. If it came with a vane, it probably has more essential cruising gear that you will appreciate. After a good check out, and lots of test sailing, dont be afraid to take it anywhere. Dont believe the nonesense that you need X-number of feet, and mega bucks to go cruising. Tahiti looks the same from the cockpit of a 30 foot boat as it does from a 50 foot boat. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy. _____Grant.

Had one on my Ericson 27
Good Reliable engine but needs tender loving care
Get the manual from Moyers Marine
It's the Atomic 4 Bible
They also have all the bits and pieces you would ever need
Make sure you have a Blower that is operational
