Bottom Paint for Pacific Mexico
I have just sailed from the Pacific North West to Mexico. At the end of this season I will haul the boat and will redo the antifouling paint. I'm currently using Micron CSC and have been very happy with its performance in the PNW. Does anyone have any experience with it in Mexican waters? Can anyone comment on the products available in Mexico? I have been told the local brands are Comex, Sherwin Williams and Proline.
New to these waters and any advice is appreciated.
Thanks
Derick

Re: Bottom Paint for Pacific Mexico
My advice is to ask the locals and or the local boat yards, cause it seems that what works outstanding in one area may suck in another, and assumption is locals know for sure.

Can't comment on Comex since I've never run accross it to my knowledge, but I'd stay away from anything Proline or Sherwin Williams make in regions of moderate to high fouling.

Re: Bottom Paint for Pacific Mexico
when you buy bottom paint here make sure the cans are well stirred. occasionally one meets unsavory repair and paint folks, and they donot mix paint well, so it can be used by others after you pay for it.
comex works well down here as does proline. have not met with sherwin williams for bottom paint yet.

Re: Bottom Paint for Pacific Mexico
I hauled out in La Paz a few years ago after buying my current boat. I brought the bottom paint down from So Cal. The bottom was previously painted with Petit Hard Trinidad so I just stayed with it. If you have a TIP I think you can bring things through the border for the boat. I did many times. If you buy the paint from the yard you might end up paying much more. Possibly double. This was told to me by the yard manager. By the way the Trinidad paint seems to work very well.

Re: Bottom Paint for Pacific Mexico
We used Comex paint for several years while in Mexico. We typically cruised for 6 months and then left the boat in Mazatlan or Barra for the rest of the year. While cruising I would clean the bottom which typically only need an occasional scrape with a plastic putty knife to remove the odd barnacle. When the boat was left for the summer we bagged the prop and instructed the man watching the boat for us to only clean the bottom every other month.
We found that the Comex paint lasted three cruising seasons with the third season requiring more frequent cleaning.
Overall I would say that despite the warmer water it performed as good or better than the Trinidad or UltraCoat that we used in the states.

Re: Bottom Paint for Pacific Mexico
Derek,
We are in San Carlos and I am looking at bottom paint as well. Did you buy the Comex paint and can you offer any feedback? No doubt it is too early to evaluate the performance but if you can provide details of the paint you bought, it would be appreciated.
