Which sealant for Lexan
I'm replacing the glass in my Portlights with Lexan. What's the best sealant that won't adversely affect the Lexan?
Thanks, Ken

Re: Which sealant for Lexan
The glass is in horrible shape, cracks, etc. written up in survey. Lexan is easier to reproduce and cheaper.

Re: Which sealant for Lexan
3M makes an adhesive/caulk, aka sealant, specifically for Lexan and plastics. I don't recall the product number but West Marine carries it. Oddly enough, they also sell the same(?) product under the West Marine brand at a higher price. #M or West can tell you which product it is.

Re: Which sealant for Lexan
Butyl tape-same as holds your car windshield in place.
Won't affect Lexan, easy & clean to work with, doesn't crack or dry out, stays flexible, not affected by UV,easy to remove 30+ yrs from now & won't leak.
Available at auto parts store or Maine Sail(top quality).

Re: Which sealant for Lexan
I used dow corning 739 on my lexan windows. bonding to fiberglass. I have also heard of 795 being used , suggest you go to dow corning website and look up both.
you can probably find it on amazon. note that you have to designate white or black when you order. If I remember? 795 would be stainless to lexan.

Re: Which sealant for Lexan
I used Dupont 795 on out Hatch lexon replacement and worked excellent. UV will degrade and cause crazing in lexon in fairly short time, so glass would be recomended though much more expensive.

Re: Which sealant for Lexan
Just to give a different opinion, Sikaflex makes a system of sealants and primers that will give a secure bond between Lexan and aluminum. It's a bit complicated, but gives great results.
I cracked one of the pieces of new glass when I was replacing the old glass that was in my ports and it was the devil to remove the frame and the broken glass.
I am going to screw pieces of Lexan over all my ports as permanent storm shutters and for this I will use butyl rubber.

Re: Which sealant for Lexan
Have you tried an industrial automotive glass supplier/cutter as in buses?
I have had them cut a flat windshields, with radiused corners, for dune buggies.

Re: Which sealant for Lexan
Only GE (maker of Lexan) approved stuff is SCS 2000 SilPruf. 5200 is a big mistake read the tube.
Used scs2000 no leaks no peeling.
