Small boat - Scandinavia to India

Sweden to India - sub 100 hours coastal small keelboat experience . Job in India would like to take Maxi 77 (maxi 26) with me is it possible through inland canals and shorter coastal legs? Are there any guides on continental canals or similar journeys?

Suggest you first look at a world map... Some mountain ranges, deserts in between ... Do it by push bike if you want the adventure and ship your boat in a container.

Canals? Short coastal? How long do you have to move this boat to India? Years? Decades?

Re: Small boat - Scandinavia to India

Doable but long and not easy: long distance, hot climates, red tape, pirates, etc. That's assuming the French canals, then the Med then the Red Sea route.

There are books for each stage of the route except not very much for the Yemen to India part.

Sailing in a very small boat, I would go thru Panama, Pacific, etc. This is also a long haul but possibly the easier one to manage. More open water sailing, less canaling and coasting.

Cheers,
b.

What employer would wait for you to do such a long journey before starting a job?

If you really want it there, put it into a shipping container and ship it there.

It's about 6500 nautical miles from Stockholm to Mumbai through Kiel canal, French canals and Suez - not coastal hopping.

Job = money.

Shipp it. Most cargo ships will deliver. Beware of red tape and taxes in India.

Thankyou so much for the constructive replies!

Crazy idea I know, blue sky thinking.

I wonder whether Maxi 77 would fit in a container?

Re: Small boat - Scandinavia to India

Didn't the vikings make it to the Black Sea going through what is now Russia? There may have been a few portals along the way. But a truck to India might work for your Maxi 77.
Don't give up your dream!!!

I'd bet you could fit this thing into a 40' container.

Cheapest freight would be onboard of some old ship being on route to be stripped and scrapped in India..

Re: Small boat - Scandinavia to India

Yes. Exactly.

Any shipping agent will tell you what fits into which container (of which there are many sizes) BUT normally a small boat like this can be moved as plain deck cargo.

Optionally you can buy a similar small boat in Australia or Thailand and sail it to India then - much less distance and easier sailing.

Cheers,
b.

Why not just buy a boat in India? They could make you one fairly quickly and cheaply.

Good idea - I wonder who would be able to link me up with a boat. Unloading the other end wouldn't be possible though as they lineup for the beaching procedure (barring pushing it off the stern).

Hi - plenty of traditional fishing rigs though fibreglass leisure yachts are few and far between apparently, especially where we might be going.
