There's a Pearson 30 for sale in St. Ignace, MI for seven grand. It was on craigslist not too long ago. A good friend of mine was the previous owner and took care of all the problems. He rebuilt the Atomic Four, ground out and re-glassed all the thru-hulls, rebuilt the leaky rudder post, tore out the cockpit floor and replaced the rotten core, scraped off all the bottom paint and put two coats of epoxy on before putting bottom paint on. This would be a good, reliable, easy to sail, cheap boat for you. Sounds like a great adventure.

Rig deep reefing and invest in a cabin heater and this isn't a bad suggestion. Be aware that the Pearson 30 (very much a "middle middle" Chevy kind of '70s cruiser) with an Atomic 4 will have at best only 90 NM of motoring range, so you will have to sail as much as possible and/or carry jerry cans of gas on deck.

Re: What Kind of Boat Would You Use to Sail Around Lake Superior ?

i have a 1994 nimble 30 express i sail on lake superior. out of duluth ,mn on the western end of the lake. yanmar GM20F 2 cyl diesel which uses very little fuel . i sail as much as can . it would be nice to have cabin heat on this cold body of water, otherwise you have to dress like it's winter out in the middle of the lake.

Re: What Kind of Boat Would You Use to Sail Around Lake Superior ?

All depends on what you consider affordable. It's a big range.

Any of the CS Yachts, CS27 CS30 or CS33, depending on how much you have to spend and how much room you require. Very well built & hold their value. There are lots for sale in the Great Lakes region.

Older couple in the slip next to us take a CS27 from the south end of Georgian Bay to the North Channel for 2-3 weeks each year, very comfortably.

I don't know much about Lake Superior, but I know a whole lot about wives.

You want something with an enclosed head. Period. If someone shows you a boat with a portipotty where you'll be able to hear each other tinkle in the middle of the night, keep looking.

Second, you'll want a boat with a galley that has something better than an alcohol stove. There are a lot of fellows out there who will tell you that an alcohol stove is just fine, but these fellows tend either to be bachelors or divorcees.

Finally, give a thought to how the boat will handle adverse conditions, even at anchor. Will it ventilate well on hot days? Will your marriage survive a rainy day cooped up down below? Better to ask such questions before you buy the boat, rather than to wait until it starts raining.

Welcome to the forum!

Oh oh. What's wrong with the alcohol stove?

You'd have to ask my wife.

So it's not necessarily the stove?

If you are still looking, I have a Pearson Vanguard with new sails and a Yanmar 3GM30. I have sailed it all over the Great Lakes and we recently bought a bigger boat. I'm willing to sell cheap. Email me if interested.
