Lagoon 400 House Batteries: Original & Replacement

I'm in the process of buying a 2010 Lagoon 400 with the original house batteries. As you might expect, they need to be replaced.

One of the contractors I spoke with said they are a European size unavailable in the US. (The boat is in Florida.)

I have three questions for this forum:

1) What were the original house batteries? I saw a spec for 140 Ah in the users guide, but not a real specification for form factor (4D, 8D, group 31, etc.) The 4 batteries in the boat are about 19.5" x 7" x 8" each.

2) If you replaced the house batteries in your Lagoon 400, what type (original size, 4D, something else) and number of batteries did you install?

3) Are batteries of the original form factor available in the US?

Thanks!

I have EXIDE 120 AH X 4 but have been advised these are replacement if you want same with the same:

4 X Sonnenschein A500 12V 120Ah gel batteries

Mine are still fine now close to 4 years.

It probably doesn't matter. The house battery compartment on the L400 is large and many different battery configurations may be installed. Varius options were and are available from new. You may need to reposition the battery tie down straps, which is easily done. It's not like a car, where only one specific battery size will fit.

Many owners have changed the original battery configuration and usually upsized. We have converted to Lithium batteries and so have plenty of spare space in the battery compartment.

Re: Lagoon 400 House Batteries: Original & Replacement

Thanks tuskie and arsenelupiga. I found a local distributor for the Sonnenschein A512/120A. However, I think I will switch to three 4D batteries, at 210 Ah each, for a total increase in capacity of 150Ah (30% increase) for half the cost and 3x better cost/Ah.

I don't think 8Ds will fit the battery compartment well.

Re: Lagoon 400 House Batteries: Original & Replacement

Just to close out this thread, we found a way to fit 3 8Ds: two are in the forward section under the port aft berth (just under the drawer), and the third is aft of the divider, between the other house batteries and the fuel tank. We went with Full River AGMs for a total capacity of 780Ah.
