Dang, that would be my worry anytime crossing an area with any kind of "smuggling" going on. if there is risk of getting boat confiscated, its always easier to do it in a "borrowed" boat.

Wonder what happened between the police saying "you can pick your boat up" and it ending up on the shore. Or maybe it already was there.

Just a side note: I think they used the boat for smuggling the people (transporting migrants for a fee), not trafficking them.

That is simply horrible, on every level.

They must have picked up their human cargo somewhere else. Nidri is full of dense waterfront accommodation and bars/restaurants. The channel is fairly narrow too, so boats have to pass within a hundred metres of all that gawking humanity.

56 souls on 50 footer would have stood out like a sore thumb, at any time of day or night. Most of those people must have climbed on board someplace else, perhaps in the wilder southern or western flanks of Lefkada.
