Over 30 Feet Trimaran in Texas

We are looking for some trimarans to look at. We know cats and monos but trimarans, I dont think I've been down below a tri, let alone sail one. not lookin for a free ride, we have a friend who will hopefully take us out in his F-27.
But we would love to see some cruising tris that can fold or dismantle for transport. Any tris over 30 ft in Texas/Louisiana willing to give us a tour?
We love the Farriers, contours, dragonflys..am I missing some?

Anyways, thanks
Mrs. Rain Dog

If you are looking at folders the Telstar 28 was in production for a few years. It was made by the Gemini Cat poeple, Tony Smith and co. Not as fast as a F-27, it is well thought out and roomy for the size, reportedly easy to launch.

This F-27 is on the Dallas CL. Jan 9 listing though. FWIW
1997 Corsair F-27 F27 trimaran sailboat

And a 40' Crowther non foldable. I put that in just for fun.
95 Crowther Trimaran

Neither exactly fits your criteria except for price. Remember all boats are compromises.

Re: Over 30 feet Trimaran in Texas

I've been reading about the searunners all night, have y'all seen Jim Brown's videos? Love the boat, already sent the link to my husbands computer ( hint hint) to see what he thinks.
Does anyone have experience with the A frame? It can be taken apart for trailering but can it fit on one trailer?

Re: Over 30 feet Trimaran in Texas

I technically own a Searunner 31 as well as the Nicol. They are great boats, it is worth the effort to find one that has been built and coated with epoxy or has been very well maintained because they are plywood boats and can rot. I say I technically own because I was given one to part out and remove by a storage yard owner. The main hull was rotten so I saved the rig hardware and amas for eventual reuse and cut up the main hull which was past repair after retitling the boat. It is straight forward to dismantle one BUT, a large job. The amas unbolt easily as do the a-frames, however the a-frame design enters the hull skins and attaches to the bulkheads with many bolts. So you have to carefully reseal every time you put it back together as this is one of the great rot areas. Other areas are around the centerboard trunk. I think this is caused in part by the center cockpit layout which doesn't allow air to pass easily from bow to stern when the boat is closed up for storage. Wood boats need good ventilation so it is worth looking for one that has it. That said they can be found very affordably, they sail well and have good room for the size. Jim Brown is a really great guy and there is a large community of very dedicated owners. While I think you could put one together and take it apart once a year, more than that won't be very fun. I'd allow a few days to get everything done though I'm sure the practiced could do it in one looong day. They are better for actual cruising than many of the modern mousetraps, some of which barely have room for the mouse.

Re: Over 30 feet Trimaran in Texas

Hi Ocean Girl,
I agree with Cavalier. We purchased our Searunner last year. It took a day to take the boat apart and get on the trailer for a 700 mile trip home. The trip was easy--no problems. If you look on my profile there are pictures of the boat being hauled.
We luckily found one with very little rot...however does need some fiberglass work. I agree that maybe once per year, at the most, to take apart and move. But still this gives some flexibility with cruising grounds. Also we can keep her in our back yard for the redo.
We love our boat and wouldn't have any other (unless maybe another Searunner 31' already ready-to-go).

Re: Over 30 feet Trimaran in Texas

Jim Brown is very forthcoming about what to check for, as the boats have been around long enough for any trouble spots to show up they also now how to repair them. The #1 safety spot is the forestay tang. An outer stem covers the attachment and is glassed over for a molded look. Over the years water can get in from the deck if the sealant isn't maintained. If rotten you can drop the mast if the headstay lets go and the staysail isn't rigged. On any Searunner go up to the headstay tang and try to push it sideways where it goes into the hull, give it a good shake If there is any movement its time for the repair. On the Outrig.org site there are Multihull Surveying videos available by John Marples which are a good way to learn for those starting out.

Re: Over 30 feet Trimaran in Texas

you can always check out user JMolan's 34'er - for sale in the classifieds. Getting a bit away from trailerable, but looks pretty good. He mentions it has a trailer, but I'm not clear if that's a road trailer, or just a yard trailer.

Re: Over 30 feet Trimaran in Texas

Thanks for the input, we really like the sea runners too. I didn't know you could trailer them. Anyone along the Texas coast who'd like to show their vessel ?

Corsiars- easy to trailer, great resale, good quality, seems to lean more towards speed than cruising, no kick up system for when aground

Telstars - easy to trailer, cheaper, harder to find. Nice amas folding system.

Dragonfly- when we win the lottery

Contour - great boat, hard to find, seems geared towards cruising

Sea runner- good design, home built, great price. Mostly plywood, so would want one restored or newish. Can be trailered..?

Thanks
Erika

Re: Over 30 feet Trimaran in Texas

the Contour ain't TOO hard to find Most are on the East Coast though, I know of 3 on the West Coast. Don't know of any on the Gulf. I'll check the v-berth size this weekend - going out sailing Sunday.
