2009 Lagoon 500 Refit - Sharing our learnings...

Just wanted to share our write-up on our recent Lagoon 500 refit that might benefit others heading out on a long term cruise. This is a learning in progress so I am definitely open to things we could have done differently or better

Our Refit for Cruising

I also wanted to say thank you to the forum for all the help in getting us underway - the information found on CruisersForum has made all the difference for us!

Dear Dansand

I see that you selected a larger (heavier) anchor than the one that came with my Lagoon 500. I'm totally fine with that, and would also like to upgrade. I'm curious, did you also upgrade your windlass? Reason why I ask is that, recently, the flange on my windlass completely broke and so I'm needing to replace it. If I also go with a significantly heavier anchor (121lbs) should I also beef up the windlass, and if so, any recommendations? Thanks!

We have the same windlass but did buy a spare motor and manual override just in case we have issues with our lewmar v5. So far so good with no issues but I do motor up to the anchor and break it free with the throttles first before powering it up.

Nice fuel polishing system! Which diesel transfer pump did you choose and why? What quality issues are there with fuel transfer pumps?

So if I understand correctly, your 2 x 3way valves allow you to use one valve to draw from port or stbd tank, and the other 3way allows you to pump to either tank?

Thanks in advance for any feedback👍

We went with the Reverso 12V pump. It only does 3GPM but we have two 120 Gal tanks so we can filter an entire tank in an hour. Here is the link for the pump

You are spot on regarding the 3 way valves - they allow us to recirculate one tank or transfer between tanks. We are making a small change here before we get to the DR so we can pull diesel from the cans through the 2 Micron filters instead of pouring it right into the tanks directly.

One improvement would be to add a pressure gauge for the top of the Racor so we could see if the filter is getting clogged...

Hi Guys, Great information. My house sale compleats in 7 weeks so can't wait to start viewing lagoon 500's. Is the 500 nice to live aboard and although it's a crusing catamaran what's it really like to sail. Wishing you all the best. Dave
