Crew Wanted: New York to the med

Looking to leave April 2017 .crew wanted aboard 34 ft sailboat. 25 euros /day all inclusive will meet up in Bermuda with organised Atlantic crossing group on to the Azores .Tours, parties all inclusive. Are you paying 25 Euros a day or expecting to be paid that rate?

Hi yes I'm expecting 25 euros a day . This covers all the good, drinks insurance and helps towards the 1200 Euro fees for joining the fleet at bermuda

What type of vessel do you have? Age, length, make and model?
How many paying crew are you looking for?
What flag do you sail under?

Charge is per day. You say in your title the trip is from New York to the Med. Yet you than say it's leaving Bermuda or whatever and going to throw black hole. Oops I mean the black Sea. Very strange.

Are you the boat owner?
Are you the captain and if so how long have you done offshore sailing?
Does your sailboat have AIS?
How old are the sails?
How old and how many hours on the engine?
What is your fresh water capacity?
How much fuel are you preparing to take?
Are you insured?

And most importantly. What captains license do you hold that allows you to have paying passengers?

You say it's costing $1,200 to "join" the fleet in Bermuda. Can you tell us the name of the fleet organizors?

How many vessels are expected in this fleet?

There are probably also Coast Guard regulations that the boat must adhere to if it's taking paying passengers.

However in any of these rallyies there are lots of boats looking for crew. Owner pays everything except on shore drinks and airfare.

Look long at someone asking for money, not common practice.

Last I heard--which was when that decision was announced by the USCG--that's correct only if the "sharing" is totally voluntary and after the fact to ensure that. So if I take you sailing and ask you to pay $20 up front for a share of food, booze, and gas? That's not voluntary. I'm in the regulated charter business. If I ask you to chip in for expenses after we get back and tie up, you have the option of doing so, voluntarily, or stiffing me. Now, the USCG agrees it is voluntary cost sharing and I'm not in the charter business. I know a number of folks who will say "let's split the costs...we'll settle up at the bar after we get back" or similar, to ensure there can be no confusion about it. Confusion, like a lawyer asking in a courtroom "Did you have to pay before you left? Were you given that impression?" and other complications. But that's not the issue here, we obviously have someone trying to fly below the radar and ignoring the rules.

As a prior duty USCG Marine Safety Detachment officer, I can tell you that if you receive ANY payment for a voyage on a vessel who's voyage originated or finalized on US soil you are operating a charter business. Therefore any insurance which you currently have will be voided if a claim is filed and you have not made proper changes to your policy, and have not had a USCG commercial vessel inspection.
Additionally, operation of a non licensed charter is a serious criminal offence which is seriously prosecuted.

No, he just made a translation error. He wants passengers.
Passengers pay for their ride.
Crew GET PAID for their ride.


Even if they don't get paid anything except the pleasure of their ride.

If not a scam it is a good imitation of one. Paying for passage is not "crew" in my dictionary.

This pay/ cost sharing has been discussed many times here.

Regulations aside, it seems to me the issue is who needs/wants the passage more.

If the skipper needs crew then he pays, while someone wanting experience and fun and not in it for the $$ then they pay.

Surely, can cost the skipper a packet to take someone on board in many different ways so I don't have strong feelings either way.

Good reason to sail solo. 😆
