Hi All -

I´m going to sail on the Caribean, Mediterranean and Adriatic. I read some recent threads about theft and boat security. That rises a question. I´m Brasilian and would like to know what is the position of law enforcement in those places regarding guns on the boat. Should I leave then at home or can I store then on the boat?

My thought is, if you are thinking of cruising where you think you need to have guns on board, you might want to consider cruising somewhere safer.

I see this is your first post.

Your topic is a controversial one, and many threads over the years have addressed every aspect of carrying guns on sailboats or cruising boats.

The issue is a "hot topic" because opinions vary and can become "political."

I suggest you start by looking into some of the many previous discussions, spending a few hours reading the many comments and opinions should help you be better informed of what cruisers think on this topic. Here is a link to a list of threads in CF that contained the topic or key term "guns."

As someone mentioned, you can also check official sources and compiled cruising information in books or sites like "Noonsite" for local restrictions or warnings by country.

I find that an AK 47 works well as an anchor in sand, but only if it's modified to fully automatic. On the other hand, a rocna is great for self defense as long as it's one size larger than manufacturers recomendations and on all chain rode.

Many countries confiscate your weapons for the duration of your stay. You should find out about the rules of each country you visit, then make your decision. It is best that you do it for yourself, that way the responsibility is yours all the way and a mistake could not be laid off to "poor advice you got off the internet." After all, it is you who could go to jail, have your boat confiscated, and so on.

Guns are controlled by the country you visit each one has different rules. You are headed in right direction to ask. I have heard EU they confiscate your weapons. Then you have so many days to reclaim them when leave . If you don't they destroy them.
Don't take what is repeated here about guns for fact unless you verify it with the countries authorities. You may end up losing your weapons to govt. never to be seen again.

Sorry but you a completely wrong somewhat mistaken ...

You need a smaller Rocna so you can have it with you at all times.. even when going ashore. Doesn't half give them a fright when they pull a knife and you pull out your Rocna.....

I own a sword, a little better than a rocna...I carried a gun for the last 35 years, with permit, and never had to draw it, but...

There is no requirement to carry a guns in the Med or Adriatic. Leave them at home or deep six them when you start to cross he Atlantic.

Europeans don't have the same culture to guns that Americans have and ownership really is down to a tiny minority.

Clearing in and out of each country with different rules using a language that is foreign to you will be a nightmare. Leave them at home, and thereby have a safe and enjoyable time in Europe.

Where I came from, 86% of the people is pro guns. It´s a fact of life, you live with then or became a sheep and then if you live or don´t is in other hands.
