Use of AIS in Egypt

From now, use of AIS in Egypt is crime punished by 5 years in jail. This is not a joke. So beware of Egypt and be very carefull around their coast. Trust me, there is nothing now, you need to see that badly.

Take it as a warning. I am from Europe and it is terrible, what is going on down there...

I've never heard of this...is there a reason given? And are there other places that do this?

Re: Use of AIS in Egypt

Don't know about other places. Just have a confirmed info from cat owner, who sailed there (4 boats total). Two just returned back and did not even tried to get there. Two did, made it to the port through customs and military and there were boarded by military, accused of crime and only because this law wasn't offical yet, the let them go, after intervention of russian diplomat, who accidentaly the owner of the cat known. Pretty scary story.

Forgive my scepticism but do you have any evidence for this at all? A link, perhaps?

In the absence of a link, I call bs.

Re: Use of AIS in Egypt

Well, maybe I made just one wrong statement, use of AIS on private vessels with possible connection to Internet. Something about spying...

Also I tried to give there link for original message, but it is being approved by admins.

With current events in that area, it should be low on anyone's list of places to go. Laws are arbitrarily enforced/made up on the spot worse even than here in civilisation.

Re: Use of AIS in Egypt

Brin, it would just be some scam to try and get bribes from tourists.
It happens all the time there. You can't even get on a train without being told its a locals train and you are a tourist and so they will lock you up.... Unless you give them backsheish.

You give them a dollar or whatever. With boats it's more difficult because its obvious you can afford more so they will try to take you for whatever you can afford.

They are all on the take. It's a good place to see history, but one needs to be ultra savvy to take a boat there.

Re: Use of AIS in Egypt

Your link that information is from is from 2010. Use Google Translate to read it.

I'd say whatever issues were then have been dealt with, as no one in the past 3 years has advised this being an issue.

I went through Suez Canal in 2010 and no one mentioned it as an issue. I didn't have AIS then but others did... Not that anyone used it in the Red Sea
