36' Beneteau Catamaran - Thoughts?

Hey all, I've seen some really great feedback on all kinds of stuff on the forum. I really like this 36' Beneteau Catamaran Type Blue 2 (please see link). It seems like a pretty rare boat so not finding a lot of information. Do you guys think this boat is capable of crossing the Atlantic and Pacific? What average speeds would be likely? Are there any known issues with this model? Any other insights are very welcome! Thanks!

Re: 36' Beneteau Catamaran - Thoughts?

I remember looking at one online some years ago; I believe it was in Mexico. It looked like it needed work, and emails made me shy away. I would first ask when the last survey was done and take a look at it. A recent survey and a good long look at it would be the first order of business, in my mind.

Re: 36' Beneteau Catamaran - Thoughts?

From what I remember searching other threads about this model was that the tankage and storage was too small for longer cruising. Also, the cockpit and boom set-up prevented convenient use of a bimini. (If not outright preventing all use).

This particular model's "claim to fame" was that it was demountable and could be put into a shipping container and shipped to whatever destination the owner wanted to sail. I've read that they sailed fairly well, IIRC there was a conflict of interest between Beneteau and the US importer, which is why they were never very popular.

A aquaintance bought the one in Mexico for $30k. It needs a lot of work and there were other issues, but the price was right. I haven't been on it yet, so I'll reserve judgement.

I thought I remember a comment from Richard Woods (catamaran designer) from this forum regarding its tendency to hobbyhorse. It definitely wasn't a favorable review.

First of all - it's 34ft, not 36.

Hulls are Cramped.
Heard it sails very well.

A recent test of this oldie was published in some french sailing magazine. It appears that the main problem comes from the too low platform that slams into the waves.

The one he's looking at appears to have stern extensions.

From what I've heard:

Hulls very fine; so it's fast but no load carrying without serious pounding.

In this it's a bit like the Edel Cat, which appears attractive, but overloads and pounds with supplies for a voyage.

Both more suitable for Mediterranean cruising, where you daysail from port to port and eat in a usually excellent restaurant ashore.
