After Michael: Marina Reports

It's business as usual at Palafox Pier in Pensacola, with no damage at all. I'm interested in conditions at marinas further east, Panama City, Port St. Joe, and Apalachicola; we generally stop there on our way to the Keys.

I'm very sorry for all those affected by this terrible storm.

Re: After Michael: Marina Reports

A friend of mine that lives in Pensacola is headed over to the Panama City Area today with a generator, fuel and supplies etc to assist a family member that lost most everything in the storm.

So I'm guessing if homes were destroyed some marinas were as well.

We have tons of trees down, power outages etc here this am from the remnants of that same storm which seems quite strange this far away. Buoys nearby had gusts to 65 knots

if you can get pix of the marina wet and dry., and see how many different boats an be found, would help many, i think. it will be a long time before the inventory of destruction is completed.

Sorry, I'm about 900 miles away........and my friend is assisting family members that lost their home so he may not be interested in marina damage at the moment

Re: After Michael: Marina Reports

In a quick look at the NOAA aerial views, it appears that all the marinas are quite heavily impacted however, it does seem that there are still anchorages that are viable for most locations if you just need an overnight rest spot. I'm sure the shoaling and underwater will be an issue and not so easily seen on these aerial views. We are planning to head to Key West next month from Pcola and I think we can keep with the plan to do these ports until we need to jump across from the Carrabelle area.

After Michael: Marina Reports

Panama City, City Marina is gone it looks like. Massilina Bayou looks of have fared much better, and did St Andrews. Pic of City Marina.

Re: After Michael: Marina Reports

The damage to City Marina doesn't surprise me. It is almost a straight shot through jetties to the marina. Its only advantages were that it was quick to the gulf and it was a very short walk to downtown. Here is a short excerpt from my blog;

"We took possession of Vigah on the eve of a “50 year winter storm” in March of 1993. At the time she was at Panama City Marina in Panama City, FL. The dock was perhaps only 20 ft wide and Vigah is 12 of that. We had winds of 60 mph + . We melted 3/4 dock lines like butter. It was a very busy night adding chaffing gear and replacing lines. The next morning it was calm. The cars in the parking lot had at least an 1/8 inch of salt crusted on them. So begins the saga."

We finally settled on Watson Bayou. The NOAA pics have a blind spot where the marina is and a pull out yard. There are a lot of boats piled up on its eastern shore though so it may not have faired well either.

This time PC may not rebuild the marina. St Andrews Marina has some damage but appear to have survived in much better shape.

Re: After Michael: Marina Reports

Bay Point is tore up bad. But there are slips intact obviously with no services. Most of the dock is damaged, some quite badly but it is walkable. More boats made it than didn’t.

Treasure Island was hard hit but it has some pilings up.

That second picture, with the shredded sail and the broken furler is why people needed to have removed sails.
