Columbia 29 Exhaust

Does anyone know how the exhaust is routed on a Columbia 29 with an Atomic 4? I have spent the fall and early winter getting the boat painted and all brightwork shiny again. Wow, was that a lot of work. Now I am working on the engine. The PO had a small heat exchanger and from there a wet exhaust hose going almost straight back to the transom and out above the waterline. I guess what he did was OK since it went that way for over 20 years, but I thought you should have a high spot or something to keep water from backing up into the engine.

Thanks
Carl

Re: Columbia 29 Exhaust

Hi Carl! Good Old Boat has a good article about it all: "Guidelines for evaluating and installing wet exhausts"
Sorry I can't post a link right now but if you go to the "Good Old Boat" home page and search it I think that will work. You are right, it's not so good to run the exhaust straight out to the transom. Good luck and keep the good work bringing that classic back to life!

Re: Columbia 29 Exhaust

With the water lift muffler the high spot is in the muffler. On my old boat mine was original and just like the above picture. It survived many 10ft and 40 plus knot days on the great lakes without issue. I say if the design isn't broke don't fix it. You can buy a stainless version of the water lift muffler from Moyer if yours rots out. Otherwise you could run a high loop and vent in the stern lazarette before it goes out but you'll loose storage there

Re: Columbia 29 Exhaust

Appick I did not see the picture above? I now have a standpipe, that does have a small leak, I could easily use it as a template and make one out of SS. I thought the water lift muffler was in the low spot?
If I get to the North Channel this summer I will keep an eye out for you, probably not many Lippincotts around. Or if you venture through the locks, look me up, I am in Munising.
Thanks
Carl

Sry I was referring to your picture with the current muffler. You can use brazing rod and a torch to patch an holes in the bronze fyi. I actually sail out of Muskegon MI.
